The Office of Federal Relations serves as the primary link to the federal government, working regularly with Congress, the White House, and federal agencies on matters that affect Indiana

University and higher education.

Job Summary

The Indiana University Office of Federal Relations internship will provide a student intern with work experience that challenges the student to think critically about the political and legislative

landscape in Washington, D.C. The intern will begin to develop an understanding of the intersection between higher education and the policymaking process. The intern will have the opportunity to explore their own interests through networking opportunities and events in Washington, D.C.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Works together with a tight-knit team with guidance from the Director of Federal Relations, the student intern provides direct support to the Indiana University Office of Federal Relations
  • through legislative research, administrative and logistical management, and outreach to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Attends and produces written material on congressional hearings and markups.
  • Attends webinars and events focusing on issues relevant to the university.
  • Conducts an in-depth research project on a federal issue important to IU, and present findings to the office.
  • Learns how to effectively advance the university's needs and interests at the federal level.
  • Engages with the higher education community through organizations including MU and Association of Public & Land-Grant Universities (APLU).
  • Fosters relationships with IU alumni in the Washington, D.C. area.
  • Engages with visitors to the IU-DC Office, providing a welcoming environment upon entry.
  • Tracks pending legislation of interest to Indiana University using a variety of online tools.
  • Conducts research on the legislative impact of bills under consideration in Congress.
  • Helps facilitate meeting requests and aid in appointment and calendar management.
  • Provides administrative support during university events in the D.C. Office.
  • Networks with university alumni and professionals working in the higher-education community in D.C.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

  • Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University (preferably with an interest in government, public policy, higher education, or relevant field)

SKILLS

Required

  • Proven ability to write and communicate effectively, especially in relation to complex and ever-changing subjects
  • Basic understanding of the legislative process and the political mechanisms that contribute to lawmaking
  • Experience working on projects from start to finish
  • Experience working on tasks and projects with varying levels of urgency
  • Ability to meet the needs of guests and visitors
  • Ability to creatively brainstorm new ideas while accepting constructive feedback on those ideas
  • Proven ability to work both independently and in a team setting
  • Possess a positive attitude, open mindset, and willingness to learn on the job

$16.10 per hour

Work Hours

Monday - Friday

29 hours per week
