Job Description Summary

As an Additive Materials Program Leader, you will use your materials expertise and program management skills to set the strategy and lead several key alloy and modality development programs in support of our commercial and military aviation products. You will partner with manufacturing, design, sourcing, and quality engineers and utilize daily management to drive technology readiness. These critical technologies could include, but not limited to Cold Spray, DED (Directed Energy Deposition), EBM (Electron Beam Melting), Binder Jet, and as well as DMLM (Direct Metal Laser Melting) in several alloys including Titanium, Aluminum, Nickel, and Cobalt-based alloys.

Job Description

Essential Functions / Responsibilities:

Responsibilities in this role may include but would not be limited to:

  • Support Sourcing and Supply Chain using Additive Manufacturing Methods to improve delivery and cost
  • Lead collaborative cross-functional teams while building consensus and driving alignment across materials, design, manufacturing, GE Aerospace Research, and quality teams to increase the technical maturity of advanced additive manufacturing methods using the TRL/MRL processes.
  • Execute technical projects & programs using daily management and action plans to reduce technical risk associated with new additive manufacturing methods, building and leveraging significant domain expertise in the additive field.
  • Drive risk management through the utilization of FMEA to identify key risks. Development and execute migration plans during TRL development to retire the risks.
  • Lead/support root cause investigations and corrective action implementation
  • Influence standard work for quality assurance through ownership and/or authorship of key specifications controlling powder, printed castings, and finished part standards; drive efficiency in processes and update additive specifications as needed
  • Design and conduct studies to characterize the impact of variation within manufacturing process windows, and use results to recommend updates to specifications, technical plans, and standard work instructions
  • Lead or support efforts to ensure part quality with a reduced reliance on physical testing and an increased reliance on non-destructive methods including, but not limited to in-process monitoring approaches and/or other standardized methods
  • Provide MAE (Materials Application Engineering) support for structures parts under development that utilize additive manufacturing
  • Make cross-product linkages, leveraging additive expertise to provide insights on current and potential additive components
  • Proactively identify lessons learned and best practices and ensure appropriate documentation
  • Provide consultation and share expertise with colleagues also developing additive technologies
  • Communicate significant developments with leadership and consult on technical roadmap development

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Materials or related Science Engineering field with a minimum of 4 years’ experience in materials science engineering and/or additive manufacturing material processing or handling
  • This position requires U.S. citizenship status.

Desired Characteristics:

  • 10 years of experience in materials science, with at least 7 years of industry experience in addition to any academic experience
  • Understanding of Additive manufacturing process (i.e., laser powder bed, cold spray, binder jet, DED, EBM) working knowledge and/or operation experience
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, particularly around technical documentation
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to manage difficult situations and foster positive outcomes under pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems
  • Program management skills; ability to develop, document, market, and execute programs
  • Ability to guide and influence others, especially those not in a direct reporting position.
  • Understand how to thrive in a dynamic team environment
  • Background in material characterization, including metallography, thermal and mechanical property testing and analysis
  • Strong background in physical metallurgy
  • Experience with titanium and/or aluminum-based aerospace alloys
  • Experience with nickel and/or cobalt-based aerospace alloys
