The Engineer Senior I, Technology, you will be actively engaged in driving industry-leading research and development associated with simulation of complex machinery and electrical systems for marine and offshore application

What You Will Do:

  • Serves as leader or member of technical project teams for simulation-based performance evaluation of marine and offshore systems. Performance includes energy efficiency, Green House Gas emission, economics, interoperability, and reliability. Systems include both systems of individual vessels such as power and propulsion system of a ship and those beyond individual vessels such as fleet, ports, or ecosystems including green shipping corridors.
  • Identifies and proposes Technology programs and projects in field of Simulation to management. Recommends priorities for projects within Technology.
  • Plans for and budgets programs and projects as assigned by management.
  • Responsible for carrying out assigned duties to complete projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Ensures the delivery of high-quality service and maintenance of good relations with customers and coworkers.
  • Stays actively informed concerning technical, business and management developments affecting ABS and its customers, and communicates this information promptly to management.
  • Actively promotes the services and capabilities of ABS throughout the technical and business community.
  • Writes and presents technical papers and reports concerning areas of expertise and work performed.
  • Provides day-to-day leadership and advice on areas of technical expertise to Technology and Engineering staffs
  • Responsible for development of suggested Rule changes and/or Rule development projects as assigned. Provides expert advice as necessary in matters related to the application of Rules and Regulations.
  • Ensures that all ABS Quality System requirements with regard to technical work within assigned areas of responsibility are fulfilled.
  • Performs selected engineering reviews and analyses.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years for Engineer or 5 years for Senior/Principal Engineer for relevant engineering experience in the energy industry, shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, university, or classification society.
  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Mechanical/Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture or other related discipline; MSc or PhD is preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year for using simulation software such as Amesim, Simulink, HYSYS and Anylogic

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of simulation for mechanical, electrical, and power/energy systems
  • Knowledge and experience of simulation software such as Amesim, Simulink, HYSYS and Anylogic
  • Knowledge of onboard systems such as engines and associated equipment, auxiliary machinery and propulsion systems, electrical and control systems.
  • Knowledge and experience in programing languages such as Python and Java would be an advantage.
  • Awareness of alternative marine fuels, such as hydrogen, ammonia and methanol
  • Awareness of emerging technologies and trends in the marine industry including emerging engines, fuels, propulsion and power generation
  • Strong communicator with excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent command of the English language.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others.

Reporting Relationships:

Reports, as assigned, to a Manager or Director.

Working Conditions

Work will generally be performed in an air-conditioned office environment. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to visit manufacturing plants, remote field sites, or go aboard marine vessels or structures. Work will be non-manual, but the incumbent must be able to walk and climb among equipment and structures. Occasionally may have to lift between 5‒15 pounds.
