Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Launch and Missile Defense Systems is offering an exciting opportunity for a Sr. Principal Software Engineer – X-Lab to join our team of skilled and diverse professionals. This position, located at Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado Springs, CO, plays a crucial role in supporting the U.S. President, Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is a central component of the Missile Defense System. It is a crucial operational system that enables the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, monitor battle progress, and actively manage designated networked sensors and weapon systems to accomplish global and regional mission objectives. C2BMC supports a layered missile defense capability that offers an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases. C2BMC functions as a force multiplier by networking, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations both worldwide and locally to improve performance. Furthermore, C2BMC is a vital part of all system ground and flight tests, which verify and demonstrate the current and future capabilities of the missile defense system.

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications Experimentation Laboratory (C2BMC X-Lab) is a very fast-paced and dynamic environment. The X-Lab is responsible for developing and integrating future-capability prototypes for the Missile Defense System, including providing Mission Data Services, Sensor/Weapon Integration, Algorithm Development, User Interface Development, and other critical, leading-edge missile technologies. This position will focus on integrating Mission Data Services and R&D systems into C2BMC and will contribute to other ongoing X-Lab projects as needed. The Sr. Principal Software Engineer should be comfortable with rapidly changing requirements, design challenges that require novel solutions, fast-paced activities, and tight deadlines.

Essential Functions:

  • Developing software to support Mission Data Services for both X-Lab and C2BMC Global organizations
  • Planning experiments and objectives, assembling and leading small teams to create software products, and verifying the achievement of objectives
  • Development of new prototype capabilities for potential future integration into the operational C2BMC System
  • Assist with planning, scheduling, and development of verification analysis tools, and verify experiment objectives using real-world, flight test, or simulated data
  • Ensure proper backup/archiving and documentation of experiment plans, test products, and analysis datasets
  • Good communication skills (both written and verbal) with the ability to clearly present technical approaches and findings
  • This position is located full-time on Schriever SFB and is not a remote work position
  • A small amount of travel may be required
  • Occasional off-hours work may be needed to support flight tests

Basic Qualifications:

Please note your updated security clearance and IAT/relevant certifications on your resume, if applicable.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline preferred from an accredited university and 8 years of related experience, or a Master's Degree and 6 years of related experience, or 4 years of related experience with a PhD. Or 12 years of related experience in lieu of a degree may be considered.
  • Applicants must possess a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start with the ability to obtain TS/SCI clearance
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 10% to support business needs
  • DoD 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (Security+ CE, CySA+, GICSP, GSEC, SSCP, CCNA Security, etc.) is required to start
  • Substantial experience in Java, MATLAB, and/or Python development
  • Familiar with Object-Oriented or Service-Oriented Architecture development principles and implementation
  • Full-cycle software engineering and development of new capabilities
  • Strong understanding of Basic Systems Engineering to guide software design
  • Experience translating requirements into software designs and breaking down requirements to support verification and validation of software components
  • Skilled in refactoring code to enhance reusability, readability, and maintainability in an object-oriented codebase
  • Ability to generate detailed and repeatable tests
  • Understanding of Agile software development processes and principles

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current and active in-scope DoD-issued TS/SCI clearance at time of application is highly preferred
  • Desire experience with the Linux environment
  • Experience with other object-oriented programming languages is a plus:
    • Python
    • C++, or C#
  • Experience with Bash or a similar scripting language is a plus

Salary Range: $124,900.00 - $187,300.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
