The Opportunity

The Liquid Spectrum (LQS) Applications team is at the forefront of innovation in optical networking. We develop cutting-edge software applications and algorithms that empower our customers – the world's largest telecommunications network operators – to understand, optimize, and future-proof their networks. We are passionate about providing insights into optical network performance, and using that knowledge to constantly enhance our world-class products.

As a Software Co-op Student on the LQS team, you will contribute to the development of systems and tools focused on analyzing and improving the performance of our LQS applications. You'll gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment and work alongside experienced engineers. Specifically, you will:

  • Help develop and improve software applications and tools.
  • Work with large datasets to gain insights into optical network performance.
  • Collaborate with experienced engineers on all aspects of the software development lifecycle.
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, and testing of software solutions.
  • Learn about and apply cutting-edge technologies in the field of optical networking.

The Must Haves

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • A strong interest in photonics and optical networking.
  • Solid programming skills in Python and Javascript.
  • Experience using git for version control.
  • Comfortable working in a Linux/bash command-line environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

The Assets

We're particularly interested if you have experience with many of the following:

  • Frontend development with technologies like React.
  • Containerized application development (Docker, docker-compose).
  • Distributed/parallel workloads.
  • Working with large datasets.
  • Data engineering pipelines (e.g., Snowflake).
  • Relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL).
  • Configuring Jenkins or Teamcity.

Pay Range

The hourly pay range for this position is $24.50 - $33.00

Pay ranges at Ciena are designed to accommodate variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions, and locations, reflecting our diverse products, industries, and lines of business.
