Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow (Computer Science/Cognitive Neuroscience/Life Sciences/Engineering)

Nanyang Technological University

The Cognitive Neuroimaging Centre (CoNiC) is one of the NTU’s strategic shared research facilities, serving the NTU research community and other partnering institutions. It focuses on exploring the structure and functions of the

human brain, with particular emphasis on both normal and pathological cognitive processes. Located in the Experimental Medicine Building on NTU’s main campus, CoNiC is equipped with state-of-the-art neuroimaging and brain monitoring technologies. These include a Siemens Prisma 3T MRI scanner, a Siemens 0T mock scanner, an Elekta Triux MEG system, as well as EEG, fNIRS, TMS and other neuroimaging modalities.

As a strategic shared research facility, CoNiC places strong emphasis on service quality, operational excellence and scientific integrity. With growing demand and increasing complexity in neuroimaging research, it continues to play a key role in advancing both basic and clinical research.

We seek a Research Fellow with strong hands-on expertise in designing and conducting neuroimaging experiments, proficient in image processing and programming paradigms. The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing

multidisciplinary research and play an active role in developing novel methodologies and harmonising protocols across studies. In addition to supporting research projects, the candidate will provide data analysis services to users,

facilitate collaborations across disciplines and contribute to the continuous enhancement of CoNiC’s shared facility capabilities. This role is critical to enabling high-impact, collaborative neuroimaging research across NTU and external institutions while supporting the operational and scientific success of the centre. The role is based across both the Experimental Medicine Building (EMB) at NTU’s main campus and the Clinical Sciences Building (CSB) at the Novena campus. Flexibility to work at either site, depending on project and operational requirements, is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, plan and conduct experiments using structural and functional MRI, EEG, fNIRS and other neuroimaging modalities
  • In coordination with the Assistant Director, develop and optimise imaging protocols for the users by designing paradigms and tasks for functional MRI studies
  • Perform image analysis and postprocessing using neuroimaging softwares such as SPM, CONN, BrainVoyager, EEGlab and NIRSlab, etc
  • Apply programming skills in E-Prime, MATLAB, PsychoPy and Python for stimulus presentation and data analysis
  • Conduct statistical analysis using software such as SPSS, R or Python to support data interpretation and research findings
  • Collaborate with and provide technical support to Principal Investigators in experimental design, data processing and grant proposal development, in consultation with the Assistant Director
  • Guide and mentor students (PhD, URECA, scholarly projects and attachments) and train staff in neuroimaging data acquisition and analysis
  • Contribute to CoNiC’s mission by developing new methodologies, harmonising protocols and implementing best practices across projects
  • Conduct independent research and publish findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Prepare technical documentation, progress reports, assist with grant applications and support patent-related submissions where applicable
  • Ensure quality assurance, validation of analysis pipelines and compliance with safety and research standards
  • Support troubleshooting and contribute to planning future technology upgrades
  • Participate in initiatives aimed at enhancing CoNiC’s infrastructure and research productivity through acquisition of advanced hardware and software tools
  • Undertake any other duties as assigned by the Centre Director and Assistant Director

Job Requirements:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Cognitive Neuroscience, Life Sciences, Engineering or a related field
  • Minimum 3 - 5 years of hands-on experience in neuroimaging research, particularly in MRI/EEG/fNIRS data acquisition, postprocessing and analysis
  • Proven expertise in MRI postprocessing pipelines, experience with other modalities (e.g., MEG, EEG, fNIRS, TMS) is an added advantage
  • Proficiency in programming languages and tools relevant to neuroimaging (MATLAB/Python) is essential
  • Familiarity with neuroimaging software packages such as SPM, CONN, BrainVoyager, EEGlab and NIRSlab
  • Working knowledge of experiment design and stimulus presentation software such as PsychoPy, E-Prime or equivalent
  • Experience in handling and analysing high-dimensional neuroimaging datasets with strong statistical and computational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively across disciplines in a research setting
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for reporting, documentation and scientific dissemination
  • Ability to lead and manage multiple projects and deliver results under tight deadlines with attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a proactive attitude toward supporting researchers and mentoring junior team members
  • Willingness to learn new imaging techniques and continuously upskill in emerging neuroimaging technologies
  • Willingness to work across both NTU’s main campus (EMB) and the Novena campus (CSB), depending on project requirements
