Position Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Controls Engineer to design, implement, and support control systems for advanced manufacturing equipment. This role involves leading the full lifecycle of automation projects—from initial requirements and system architecture to programming, commissioning, and long-term support. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and a collaborative mindset to support and optimize automation across a modern manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and integration of controls systems for automated equipment.
  • Manage all phases of controls development: requirements gathering, design, programming, startup, and commissioning.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and process engineering teams to define system functionality.
  • Specify components including controllers, motors, drives, heaters, sensors, actuators, and more.
  • Oversee the creation and revision of electrical schematics and control panel designs.
  • Develop and implement software for PLCs, HMIs/SCADA, motion controllers, and servo systems.
  • Execute machine startup, tuning, debugging, and qualification for automation systems.
  • Provide troubleshooting and technical support for existing control systems and production equipment.
  • Coordinate project activities and manage controls-related resources and timelines.
  • Implement system upgrades, safety improvements, and process enhancements.
  • Maintain and improve control system templates, documentation, and coding standards.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and engineering standards (e.g., NFPA 79, UL508A, ISO 13849-1).

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in controls engineering within a manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience with motion control systems, servo/stepper motors, pneumatic systems, temperature controllers, and related hardware.
  • Programming experience with motion controllers, PLCs (IEC-61131-3 languages), and operator interfaces (Ignition and/or Red Lion preferred).
  • Knowledge of PID control loops and tuning.
  • Proficiency in reading and developing electrical schematics.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (Modbus, MQTT/OPC-UA, EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, etc.).
  • Understanding of safety standards such as ANSI B11, ISO 13849-1, and electrical control panel design standards.
  • Ability to write and interpret technical documentation, including maintenance procedures and calibration protocols.
  • Project management skills with the ability to coordinate resources and timelines effectively.
  • Bonus: Experience with scripting or software development (e.g., Java, Python, .NET, SQL) and enterprise/IT system integration.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
