About The Role

The Environment Editor will be a crucial part of an expanded team under the Business Desk covering the energy transition and net zero, environmental policy and politics, and nature.

The role will involve helping our readers understand how politics and policy are changing the world around us, and how changes in nature are reshaping politics. Covering Britain’s troubled water industry is also a key part of the job.

Telegraph readers care deeply about these issues. We want to provide them with unrivalled coverage underpinned by scoops and analysis across all platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Finding the best and most interesting exclusive stories on the environmental beat by speaking to contacts, interrogating data and being curious about the world around us
  • Developing and maintaining contacts in Westminster, the energy and water industries, NGOs, countryside protection charities and other bodies and groups with a stake in the environment
  • Working collaboratively with the Energy Editor, Industry Editor, data team and other parts of the news room to produce best-in-class stories and analysis
  • Key coverage areas will include the state of nature and Britain’s waterways, climate change and net zero, Britain’s water industry, environmental policy and planning rules where they impact the environment, and the people and personalities shaping all of the above
  • Contributing to general business and economics coverage when requested by commissioning editors
  • Help develop new story formats, including data journalism and graphics, as well as text and audio
  • Working with the social media and SEO teams to promote the economics’ team’s digital output off Telegraph platforms.
  • This is a full-time role based at The Telegraph’s offices in Victoria.
  • The role includes occasional weekend working and travel on stories.

Key Skills

  • Excellent understanding of the data sources for the environment, net zero and climate, as well as the policy debates surrounding them

  • A track record of success in a national newsroom
  • Excellent contacts across industry, Government, lobby groups and NGOs
