  • The Kansas Governor’s Office internship is a premier opportunity for college students to complement their academic courseload with first-hand experience and understanding of state government and public administration.
  • This application period is for internship placement consideration for the Fall 2025 semester (approx. mid-August through mid-December).
  • The Governor’s Office internship offers opportunities in the following divisions: Constituent Services, Communications, Government Affairs, Kansas African American Affairs Commission (KAAAC), and the Kansas Hispanic & Latino American Affairs Commission (KHLAAC)
  • Earning of academic credit for your internship is a decision of your university or college. If allowed by your institution, the Governor’s Office can assist you in providing the appropriate information requested by your university or college.

Placement Summaries

  • Constituent Services: Constituent Services team members are the front line of the Governor’s office – talking to, e-mailing with, and answering questions for the citizens of Kansas. The members of this team are strong communicators that work proactively to see out answers to help constituents. Tasks may include interfacing with constituents in writing and on phone calls, documenting and tracking casework, researching state services, and assisting with proclamation signings, among other duties.
  • Communications: Develops and implements the governor’s communications strategy, including working with the media, speechwriting, and audio/video production. Tasks may include research, drafting social media content, and video editing, among other office duties.
  • Government Affairs: Oversees development of the Governor’s legislative agenda. Provides support through monitoring and analysis of state legislative policies as well as collaboration and review of executive branch agency legislative proposals. Tasks may include drafting agendas or memos, policy research, committee monitoring, and tracking legislation, among other duties.
  • Kansas African American Affairs Commission: The Commission is a seven-member body appointed by the Governor and legislative leadership that functions as a liaison between the African American community in Kansas and the Governor’s Office. Tasks might include working with the Executive Director on researching and tracking bills related to or impacting the Black community, attending committee hearings to take notes and/or writing testimony, and could include social media management
  • Kansas Hispanic & Latino American Affairs Commission: The Commission is a seven-member body appointed by the Governor that functions as a liaison between the Hispanic and Latino Community in Kansas and the Governor’s Office. Tasks may include working with the Executive Director on researching and tracking bills related to or impacting the Hispanic/Latino Community, attending committee hearings to take notes and/or writing testimony, attending monthly commission and stakeholder meetings, and could include social media management.

Responsibilities

  • Must be discreet, possess independent judgement, and maintain a keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; the ability to balance multiple tasks of high priority
  • Extensive use of technology through a laptop or desktop computer, Microsoft Office Professional software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), using the Internet, and daily use of office equipment.
  • Interacts directly with constituents, stakeholders, and other members of the public through various modes of communication
  • Assists with tracking, analysis, and reporting of data and information relevant to the specific division.
  • Assists with drafting of a variety of documents including memos, agendas, correspondence, and proclamations.
  • Acts as support staff for monitoring legislative committees, ceremonial proclamation or bill signings, photo opportunities, and other gubernatorial appearances
  • Ensures accurate documentation of interactions with constituents, agency leaders, and public officials
  • Conduct research on issues presented and recommend action steps to reach resolution

Qualifications

  • Required: Applicant should be enrolled at an accredited college or university pursuing an undergraduate degree. Recent graduates are also encouraged to apply, as well as those currently pursuing an advanced degree.
  • Communications, Political Science, Public Administration, and Business Administration majors are preferred (not required).
