Canva

Company DescriptionJob Description

Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.

Hey, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora,你好, hallo, vítejte!

Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.

Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you're near one), at home or a bit of both, it's up to you.

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Designing, developing, and deploying solutions through hands-on software development – working closely with leads, designers, and product managers to deliver features and experiments to our customers worldwide
  • Thoughtfully adopting AI into the workflow and solutions to maximise efficiency and scale
  • Primarily working on web frontend using TypeScript, with occasional work in other languages and environments
  • Facilitating knowledge sharing and effectively advocating for engineering needs to non-technical team members within the group
  • Modelling initiative and ownership in achieving goals and improving processes and solutions
  • Identifying opportunities for cross-team collaboration to work on new insights and improvements that support our goals

You're probably a match if you have:

  • Commercial experience in a software development environment, ideally with experience in building internal/external SDKs or APIs.
  • Our frontend stack consists of JavaScript, HTML, CSS, React, TypeScript, MobX, etc.. Experience in some of these would be valuable but is not required.
  • Firmly grounded computer science and engineering fundamentals, including asynchronous programming, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns.
  • Previous experience in working collaboratively with team members and communicating effectively. Giving feedback to your team members is a big expectation of this role.
  • Experience writing accessible code and reading detailed specifications (WCAG 2.2 AA, ATAG 2.0) but a genuine interest and commitment to creating an accessible experience for all users goes a long way
  • Deep nuanced appreciation and understanding of different disability models, universal design and accessibility-related standards

About the team

We want to be the most accessible design tool in the world—and with strong, sustained internal support from leadership and core product teams, our Accessibility Teams are set to achieve this mission. Canva is in a really interesting position in the accessibility space where we need to think about how everyone can use the product as well as how people can make designs that are accessible, ideally by default. Imagine being able to confidently use a design tool to make a beautiful design without seeing it. This is a deep, complex problem that is on the cutting edge of not just frontend engineering but also modern web applications.

About the Role

You'll get hands-on experience supporting and improving accessibility across multiple teams' interfaces by writing reusable, well-architected code and technical documentation. Your work will focus on fixing cross-cutting issues, scaling audit processes, establishing accessibility engineering best practices, and collaborating closely with the design system teams. You'll enhance the developer experience by creating tools, patterns, and documentation that allow other developers to build accessible features by default, ensuring our platform can scale accessibility solutions to support 1 billion users.

You’ll be working within a team of engineers, designers, and accessibility specialists.
