TxDOT's Pharr District Lab located in Pharr, TX is seeking a Material Lab Testing Inspector IV or V, to join us in the material testing and manufacturing process inspections in the lab, plants and/or at points of supply. In this position, you will assist with the day to day testing of materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance projects. Depending on skill level, this employee may serve as a lead worker and will oversee lab operations and monitor materials testing requirements results for compliance with specifications.

Salary Range:

Material/Process Inspector IV (B21): $69,600 - $87,046/annually

$5,800 - $7,253.83/monthly

Material/Process Inspector V (B22): $73,200 - $93,138/annually

$6,100 - $7,761.5/monthly

Position Description

Material/Process Inspector IV

Performs advanced material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Trains others and may serve as lead worker. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Material/Process Inspector V

Performs advanced material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Mentors and trains others. May serve as Lead Worker. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties for Material/Process Inspector IV are:

  • Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management.
  • Assists in overseeing district laboratory operations and monitoring material testing requirements and results for compliance with specifications.
  • Conducts safety and/or employee forum meetings.
  • Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors, material producers and suppliers and field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
  • Observes tests and inspections and reviews reports from other inspectors; performs quality assurance for tests and inspections.
  • Trains and assists other inspectors and private sector employees and provides project specification information.
  • May serve as a lead worker by serving as a resource for complex questions; presenting workflow and operational updates to the supervisor/manager; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operations coverage.
  • Drives/travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs, meet with supervisors and managers to resolve problems and perform unannounced inspection of operations.
  • Handles problem calls from producers, plant inspectors and construction project field personnel.
  • Maintains and calibrates equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

The essential duties for Material/Process Inspector V are:

  • Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspections.
  • Mentors and develops technical employees in test and inspection procedures and material specifications.
  • Assists in overseeing district laboratory operations and monitoring material testing requirements and results for compliance with specifications.
  • Conducts safety and/or employee forum meetings.
  • Handles material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors.
  • Maintains and calibrates equipment.
  • May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
  • Orders equipment and supplies.
  • Performs tests and inspection duties.
  • Trains and assists other inspectors and private sector employees and provides project specification information.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Material/Process Inspector IV or V: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

Material/Process Inspector IV: 3 years of experience in laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related activities.

Material/Process Inspector V: 4 years of experience in laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related activities.

(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid US driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)

  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
