The TxDOT's Pharr District is hiring a Construction Materials Lab Testing Inspector I or II to join our Asphalt Lab Team based in Pharr, TX!

In this role, you’ll help ensure the safety and quality of our state highways by testing materials such as flexible pavement, concrete and Hot Mix Asphalt. Your work will ensure compliance with the standards outlined in the TxDOT's Standard Specifications, directly supporting the durability and performance of our transportation infrastructure.

Salary Range:

Material/Process Inspector I (B18): $60,000 - $71,055/annually

$5,000 - $5,921.25/monthly

Material/Process Inspector II (B19): $62,400 - $76,028/annually

$5,200 - $6,335.66/monthly

The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position offered based on the applicant's work experience, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Position Description

Material/Process Inspector I and II

Performs material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties for Material/Process Inspector I are:

  • Conducts nuclear density tests on subgrade, base and asphaltic concrete pavement.
  • Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors and material producers and suppliers.
  • Investigates compaction problems associated with hot mix asphaltic concrete.
  • Maintains and calibrates equipment.
  • Maintains field record books for each construction project within assigned area office.
  • Performs tests and inspection duties.
  • Reports test results to field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
  • Secures, logs in and prepares samples of raw materials or manufactured materials at various stages of production for testing.
  • Drives/travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

The essential duties for Material/Process Inspector II are:

  • Handles material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors.
  • Prepares and maintains inspection or test reports and issues material reports.
  • Reviews plans and material specifications for changes in material requirements.
  • Maintains and calibrates equipment.
  • Performs tests and inspection duties.
  • Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.
  • Reports test results to field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
  • Secures, logs in and prepares samples of raw materials or manufactured materials at various stages of production for testing.
  • Drives/travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Material/Process Inspector I or II: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

Material/Process Inspector I: No experience required

Materia/Process Inspector II: *1 YEAR Laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related work

  • Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid US driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • HMA Roadway Spec-IB
  • Cert Soils & Flex Bases SB 101
  • Cert Soils & Flex Bases SB 103

  • Conducting laboratory tests

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Material/Process Inspector I and II

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to noise
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
