Director of Engineering

Location: Boston, MA or Atlanta, GA

Hiscox is seeking a seasoned Director of Engineering to lead our global engineering teams across Boston, Atlanta, and Lisbon. Reporting to the Head of Platform, this individual will be responsible for attracting and developing top-tier engineering talent while driving delivery excellence across our technology platforms. This role will be pivotal in shaping the architecture and quality of our software solutions, particularly our policy administration systems and integration capabilities. We’re looking for a hands-on, strategic leader who is passionate about engineering best practices and scaling high-performing teams in a modern DevOps environment.

Key Responsibility Areas

Engineering Leadership and Strategy:

  • Set and drive the strategic vision for engineering delivery across multiple teams and geographies.
  • Lead a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and accountability in collaboration with product and business leaders.
  • Actively contribute to technical decision-making and architectural reviews.

Team Management and Talent Development:

  • Recruit, mentor, and retain top engineering talent across Boston, Atlanta, and Lisbon.
  • Lead and manage teams of 20+ engineers, creating scalable team structures and career growth opportunities.
  • Promote a collaborative and inclusive team culture focused on continuous improvement.
  • Establish and implement standards of performance to ensure that every engineer is effective and has clear expectations.

Execution and Delivery:

  • Own engineering velocity and quality metrics across multiple product lines and platforms.
  • Implement and promote best-in-class practices for CI/CD, DevOps, testing automation, and release management.
  • Ensure timely, secure, and scalable delivery of enterprise software solutions.

Platform and Integration Architecture:

  • Guide the evolution of our insurance platform and core platform capabilities.
  • Oversee complex systems integrations that enable data flow and functionality across platforms.
  • Ensure technical solutions align with enterprise architecture and long-term strategic goals.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in leadership roles managing large, distributed teams.
  • Proven experience with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps tools, and modern software engineering practices.
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise systems integration and policy administration systems in the insurance or financial services sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead high-performing teams across global locations.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

Salary Range: $120-$160k

The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
