Director of Quality Engineering

Location: Boston, MA or Atlanta, GA

We are seeking a hands-on Director of Quality Engineering to lead and elevate quality engineering practices across all value streams at Hiscox USA. This individual will not only define the strategy for how we deliver secure, high-performing software — they will also roll up their sleeves to directly influence tools, processes, and code. Based in Atlanta, GA or Boston, MA, this critical role reports to the Head of Platform and will be instrumental in embedding a culture of accountability, automation, and continuous improvement throughout our engineering organization.

This is a hybrid role with an expectation of being in the office 2–3 days per week.

Key Responsibility Areas

Quality Engineering Strategy and Execution:

  • Define and own the enterprise-wide quality strategy aligned with Agile and DevOps principles.
  • Act as a hands-on technical leader, directly influencing automation frameworks, test coverage, and code quality practices.
  • Lead a distributed team of QA professionals across multiple value streams, setting and enforcing performance standards for each team member.

Process Engineering and Governance:

  • Establish and standardize processes for reproducing, documenting, and triaging bugs to enable fast and effective resolution by engineers.
  • Drive consistency in tooling, automation, and quality practices across all teams.
  • Define and track key metrics that reflect software quality and team accountability, using them to drive improvements.

Capability Building and Cross-Functional Leadership:

  • Coach and mentor a growing team of QA engineers and managers, developing internal talent and driving a quality-first mindset.
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering, Product, Architecture, and Security teams to embed testing early and often in the development lifecycle.
  • Lead enablement activities to uplift testing practices, with a focus on continuous testing, performance testing, and test data management.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering or quality assurance, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Demonstrated experience as a hands-on technical leader, with deep knowledge of automated testing tools and test engineering practices.
  • Expertise in modern CI/CD pipelines, cloud-native application testing, and DevOps-aligned QA workflows.
  • Strong background in performance testing, security testing, and test observability.
  • Experience setting and managing performance standards for engineering or QA teams.
  • Familiarity with Agile/SAFe practices and the insurance or financial services domain is strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills.

Salary Range: $120-$160k

The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
