Position Overview:
The Patient Services Representative Apprentice plays a vital role in supporting the Howard University Faculty Practice Plan (HUFPP) clinics. This entry-level position is designed for graduates of the Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP) and provides hands-on experience in patient services. Apprentices will gain foundational skills in healthcare administration and patient interaction in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Essential Duties:
- Accurately verify and update patient demographic information, insurance coverage, authorizations, referrals, and diagnosis codes using internal systems and insurance portals.
- Schedule and manage patient appointments, hospital orders, and visit types in accordance with schedule advisor guidelines.
- Collect and document co-pays and co-insurance, reconcile cash drawers, and ensure accurate financial transactions.
- Manage incoming correspondence, including sorting faxes and general communications, to support clinic operations.
- Collaborate with clinical staff on pre-visit planning and audit physician schedules to ensure proper authorization and management of overbooked appointments.
- Perform additional administrative duties as assigned to ensure smooth clinic operations.
Requirements:
- Graduate of the Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP) at Howard University Faculty Practice Plan.
- High school diploma from a District of Columbia public or charter school.
- Commitment to obtaining Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) certification within three (3) years of employment.
- Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office is preferred.

Expected Pay Range: $18.50 per hour
