Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the Senior Director for Clinical Development and the Practice Managers, the Medical Assistant Apprentice supports clinical operations through pre-visit planning, patient preparation, and administrative and clinical assistance. This role is designed for graduates of the Fortis Medical Assistant Program who have completed the Howard University Faculty Practice Plan (HUFPP) externship and are committed to becoming certified within a structured timeline.
Essential Duties:
- Prepare specialty-specific pre-visit planning worksheets and assist with patient intake, including obtaining and recording vital signs.
- Assist physicians with examinations and medical/surgical procedures, ensuring instruments and equipment are properly prepared and sterilized.
- Monitor patients during visits and report any adverse reactions to medical personnel.
- Collect and deliver lab samples, retrieve lab reports, and manage patient documentation including prescriptions, test orders, and follow-up appointments.
- Schedule follow-up procedures and obtain pre-certifications/authorizations for surgeries and admissions.
- Maintain exam rooms, inventory supplies, and ensure cleanliness and readiness of clinical areas.
- Provide patient education and instructions as directed by the physician.
- Support administrative tasks such as answering phones, filing records, and managing correspondence.
- Adhere to all clinic policies and procedures, maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support clinic operations.
Requirements:
- Graduate of the Fortis Medical Assistant Program or other approved program.
- Completion of the Howard University Faculty Practice Plan Medical Assistant Externship.
- Commitment to obtaining Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification within one (1) year of apprenticeship start.
- Commitment to achieving Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) certification within three (3) years of employment.
