Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer - Quantum Core

IonQ

IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.

We are looking for a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer to pioneer our next generation cryogenic and vacuum system design for our trapped ion quantum computers. As a mechanical engineer on the vacuum systems team, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.

In this role, you will be responsible for owning one of the most important parts of our quantum computer – the core that surrounds the trapped ions. The vacuum systems are complex interfaces between mechanical, optical, and electrical subsystems and their design involves competency in many engineering disciplines. In this role you will need out-of-the box thinking, precision design capabilities, and a knack for solving complex problems on the fly.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with scientists to implement physics principles in mechanical design, and be able to discern nonrealistic expectations and provide realistic solutions.
  • Mentor junior engineers in mechanical design and precision tolerancing principles
  • Own our next generation vacuum system design through conception, design, build, and test.
  • Implement precision tolerancing and kinematic constraint to mechanical, optomechanical and vacuum assemblies
  • Manage key vendor relationships to deliver the components and materials on time to meet the program requirements and schedule.
  • Perform numerical/analytical simulations and calculations of mechanical designs to model e.g. mode frequency, thermal contraction during cryogenic cycling, thermal drift and stability, etc.
  • Develop, finalize and publish project timelines, identifying key milestones, risks, and completion dates.
  • Design and procure components, tools, fixtures, and materials for hands-on characterization, testing, and validation of proposed architecture.
  • Conduct risk analysis and develop mitigation plans to ensure on-time release and delivery of project deliverables.

You’d be a good fit with:

  • 15+ years of professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 10 + years of experience in mechanical engineering with emphasis in vacuum, or cryogenic engineering
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, with experience in precision mechanical design
  • Experience building and operating cryogenic systems and/or vacuum systems
  • Experience working with external machine shops
  • Strong knowledge of and experience working with vacuum and cryogenics
  • Expertise in GD&T, precision tolerancing, kinematic constraint principles and applications

You’d be a great fit with:

  • Masters degree in mechanical engineering,
  • Experience designing and building vacuum or cryogenic systems for neutral atoms or trapped ion applications
  • Experience designing multi-disciplinary complex systems with micron level requirements
  • In addition to all of the above, you have some experience with performing thermal analysis and shock / vibrational analysis to validate the structural integrity of the unit under test.
  • Experience/success in interacting with suppliers directly, collaboration with supply chain sourcing, fostering partnerships for critical development and risk reduction
