Post Doctoral Position in Multiscale Mechanical Testing of Irradiated Materials

What You Will Do

MST-8 is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to conduct in situ SEM/TEM mechanical and microstructural characterization of irradiated materials. Techniques will include in situ SEM small-scale testing (nanoindentation, micropillar, and microtensile), in situ TEM mechanical testing (in situ TEM straining), conventional diffraction contrast (S/TEM), EBSD, and high-resolution TEM (HR-TEM) at Los Alamos National Laboratory. In situ TEM irradiation, in situ triple-beam irradiation, and other irradiation techniques may be conducted at external user facilities. The position will be awarded to the candidate demonstrating exceptional talent with a successful collaborative and scientific track record.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Expertise is required for in situ SEM/TEM mechanical testing
  • Expertise is required in conventional diffraction contrast (scanning) transmission electron microscopy (S)TEM and HR-TEM.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of metals deformation behavior.

Education/Experience: A PhD in nuclear engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry, or a related engineering discipline completed within the last 5 years or soon to be completed.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong expertise within situ testing systems such as PI 89 and Alemnis AG
  • Experience with a monochromated, image-corrected FEI Titan and other FEI SEMs and TEMs.
  • Experience with characterizing radiation effects in metals.
  • Experience with in situ TEM/SEM irradiation experiments.
  • Experience with image analysis codes.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
