Principal Structural Design Engineer
Location: Greenville, SC
Job Description:
The Structural Principal Designer provides advanced-level technical design expertise and supports major EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) projects across a variety of industries. This position may serve as an Area Lead Designer, offering design leadership and guidance within a multi-discipline project environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as an Area Lead Designer under general supervision, providing guidance to other designers and contributing to the overall success of the design effort.
- Prepare and review advanced structural designs using 3D modeling and 2D CADD tools.
- Coordinate technical design issues with engineering disciplines, project managers, vendors, and clients.
- Ensure work is performed in compliance with the Project Quality Plan and within the defined project scope, budget, and schedule.
- Perform bulk material take-offs, analysis, and tabulations for structural systems.
- Support procurement activities by reviewing vendor submittals for equipment and materials.
- Provide design-related support during construction administration, including responses to RFIs and field modifications.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
- U.S. Citizenship required
- Minimum 15 years of structural design experience in industrial, federal, or commercial EPC projects.
- Working knowledge of applicable DOE orders, federal, state, and local design codes and standards.
- Advanced technical knowledge in structural design disciplines and construction practices.
- Effective communicator with the ability to collaborate across internal and external teams.
- Demonstrated experience with EPC project execution, including use of 3D modeling and 2D CADD in multi-discipline environments.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Discipline-Specific Requirements:
- Advanced proficiency in Intergraph Smart 3D (S3D).
- Proficiency in Bentley MicroStation.
- Experience performing material take-offs and supporting design reviews.
- Ability to lead a design area independently and guide junior design staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate degree in a technical field related to engineering or drafting.
- Experience with design of nuclear structures and components under ASME NQA-1 requirements.
- Familiarity with commercial material availability and cost considerations.
- Hands-on field experience supporting construction and design adjustments.
- Prior EPC project experience in one or more of the following industries:
- U.S. Department of Energy or other federal agencies
- Nuclear facilities under QA programs
- Manufacturing, pharmaceutical, or biotech sectors
