Job Description:

The Business Operations Manager, Sr. plays a key leadership role in managing and improving the operational effectiveness of the Department of Psychology. This position provides strategic and operational support in the areas of budgeting, financial analysis, procurement and management of staff. The Business Operations Manager, Sr. will work closely with department leadership, faculty, staff and be a liaison with The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to ensure smooth, compliant and efficient execution of business functions. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, problem-solving skill and ability to handle multiple tasks effectively under tight deadlines.

Salary Range: $95,000 - $110,000; DOE

Essential Duties:

Administrative & Staff Supervision

  • Foster a community-focused environment for faculty, staff, and students.
  • As a member of the leadership team, provides input on strategic direction, plans and initiatives of financial and operational areas, practices and policies to ensure alignment with established goals and objectives.
  • Direct and review daily activities and operations, contributing to both long-term and short-term strategic planning.
  • Provides analysis of operations to target areas for improvement and work with applicable responsibility area leaders in implementing change.
  • Serves in an advisory role to various faculty, program center and staff leadership to provide advice on department and program initiatives.
  • Performs special assignments and other duties as requested by the Chair.

Budget and Fiscal Management

  • Provides fiscal leadership and management of a multi-million dollar budget that includes large variety of funding sources
  • Supervises, monitors and participates in all budgetary planning, projections and forecasting duties related to general operating, local, foundation, and grant accounts.
  • Supervises and monitors start-ups including new account set-up for new faculty, assisting in projecting expenses and resolving issues.
  • Identifies fiscal opportunities and efficiencies to advance department’s goals.
  • Plans and oversees budgeting, accounting, strategic planning, and internal operational procedures.

Personnel and Human Resources

  • Leads department’s administration of personnel policies and processes
  • Oversees personnel matters including payroll, recruitment, and employee relations.
  • Leads the business administration support staff, ensuring effective financial and HR systems.
  • Responsible for ensuring that salary planning and merit exercises balance to personnel budgets.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in Higher Education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of management principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting and budgeting practices and principles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to budgeting and accounting principles.
  • Experience in operational management within an academic or research environment.
  • Experience in developing detailed and complex budgets, financial reconciliations and reports for management
  • Evidence of strong leadership skills and the ability to manage multiple administrative functions
  • Experience in using excellent verbal and written communication, analytical and interpersonal skills
  • Experience using ASU administrative systems (i.e. Workday FMS and HCM, Peoplesoft, Analytics)
  • Experience managing, supervising and evaluating the work of assigned staff
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to work effectively in an environment subject to quickly changing priorities and short deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively utilize reporting formats and criteria to present succinct and meaningful management information to a variety of audiences with varying levels of interest/understanding.

Working Environment:

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distance to perform work. Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
