About the Role

The Knot Worldwide is looking for a highly experienced and strategic Director of Data Science to lead the data science efforts supporting our critical Planning Ecosystem. This role is a key leadership position within our Product Data team, reporting directly to the VP of Product Data.

As Director of Data Science, Planning Ecosystem, you'll be responsible for defining and executing the data science strategy for our comprehensive wedding planning tools. This includes features like checklists, guest list management, budget planners, vendor search and communication, and website builders. You will lead and mentor a small, impactful team of data scientists, empowering them to drive significant business outcomes through data-driven insights, experimentation, and advanced analytical methods.

This is an exciting opportunity to leverage your expertise in data science and product analytics to directly influence how millions of couples plan their most important day, optimize user experiences, and contribute to the continued growth and success of The Knot Worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and champion the data science roadmap for the Planning Ecosystem, aligning with overall business objectives and product strategy for our wedding planning tools.
  • Team Management & Development: Lead, mentor, and grow a team of talented data scientists, fostering a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and high performance. Provide guidance on technical challenges, career development, and best practices in data science.
  • Experimentation & A/B Testing: Oversee the design, execution, and analysis of A/B tests and other experiments to optimize key planning tool funnels, product features, and user experiences. Drive a strong culture of experimentation within the team and with product partners.
  • Strategic Analyses & Insights: Partner closely with product, engineering, marketing, and business stakeholders to identify key business questions and translate them into analytical problems. Conduct in-depth strategic analyses to uncover actionable insights that drive product improvements and user engagement within the planning tools.
  • Advanced Analytics & Machine Learning: Guide the application of machine learning techniques for advanced analyses, pattern recognition, and automation where explainability and interpretability are crucial. This may include leveraging models for forecasting, personalization, or identifying user behaviors, with a focus on informing decisions rather than necessarily deploying models into production.
  • Reporting & Measurement: Define key metrics and build robust reporting frameworks to monitor the performance of the Planning Ecosystem and the impact of data science initiatives. Ensure data integrity and provide clear, concise reporting to stakeholders.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as a key data science partner to product managers, engineers, designers, and other stakeholders, effectively communicating complex technical concepts and data-driven recommendations.
  • Technical Excellence: Stay abreast of the latest advancements in data science, machine learning, and product analytics trends, incorporating relevant technologies and methodologies into the team's work.
  • Data Governance & Quality: Collaborate with data engineering and other teams to ensure data quality, accessibility, and governance best practices are followed within the Planning Ecosystem data.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, or a related discipline. PhD is a plus.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in data science, with at least 3+ years in a leadership or management role, leading data science teams.
  • Proven track record of driving significant business impact through data science initiatives, particularly in product analytics and optimization for complex digital products or platforms.
  • Deep expertise in experimental design, A/B testing, and statistical analysis.
  • Strong experience applying machine learning for advanced analyses and automation where explainability is critical.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure) and big data technologies (e.g., Spark, Snowflake, Databricks) is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex data insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to connect data science initiatives to product and business objectives.
  • Experience with wedding planning tools or related consumer lifecycle products is a plus.
