This is an Expression of Interest opportunity for a pipeline of work towards the end of 2025, across rail projects in Sydney.

About the Role

UGL is currently looking for an experienced Secondary Design Engineer to become a key member of the Engineering teams based in Sydney. You will be responsible for providing detailed designs, developing specifications and interface with other disciplines, construction, commissioning, management and clients on design issues.

The Secondary Design Engineer will build and maintain strong relationships with the inhouse construction teams and our client to effectively deliver to client expectations. This opportunity will see you join our multi-disciplined in-house engineering team working to solve complex problems throughout the project lifecycle across all known aspects of secondary system design involvement. You will:

  • Plan and conduct professional engineering work on relevant aspects of HV Secondary Systems Strategic Planning and Conceptual Design (Protection, Comms, Data Networks etc.)
  • Provide detail design services on specialist engineering areas that include but not limited to: Protection Detailed Design (Protection Logic/Setting files, etc.), Primary Plant and Secondary Systems Equipment Specification and Procurement (Circuit Breaker, CT, VT etc.), Protection & Control Detail Schematics and Integration, Load flow, Fault level power quality and dynamic studies and analysis, Communication Systems (including Data Network using IEC 61850 protocol) design, General AC & DC System Specification and Design etc.
  • Develop specifications and interface with management on design issues
  • Through understanding of HV protection system
  • Check design work for technical accuracy and adequacy
  • Working knowledge on cable sizing software and HV modelling software
  • Assist with site commissioning
  • Meeting with customer to resolve technical issues.

About you

  • University degree in Electrical/Power Systems Engineering (or equivalent)
  • 8+ years minimum relevant experience in HV substation and HV distribution network
  • Knowledge of the HV distribution design including relevant Australian and International standards and codes
  • Fundamental understanding of HV secondary design
  • Site experience/ experience in projects being constructed and commissioned
  • Skilled at or able to learn software packages independently, such as CYMCAP, DIgSILENT Power Factory etc., would be an added advantage
