A Day in the Life

We are searching for a Director of Engineering who will be instrumental in defining future Product and Manufacturing processes efficiency and reliability for the Ponce Operation and Surgical Operating Unit. Expected to lead a team in the areas of: New product Launches, Product transfers, Processes automation from design, to implementation working closely with the Operations Innovation group, Tooling assets life cycle management from repairs and refurbishments to new tools procurement, Equipment Maintenance Operations from spare inventory management to manufacturing equipment reliability, uptime and lifecycle management, site capital management, Tool room operations and engineering innovation lab management, Manufacturing Engineers team management to drive product lines Quality and Performance through continuous improvement using the Medtronic Performance System elements, and drive a 5% annual cost down strategy partnering with other functions . This individual will be accountable to the site Manufacturing team, managing resources and programs according to Medtronic and industry policies, standards, and regulations. Further, the candidate will continue to improve departmental procedures while building upon a strong foundation of talent through hiring, change management, coaching, inclusion and diversity and mentoring. This position will work across functions within R&D, Operations Innovation, Surgical Operating Unit, Opex, Manufacturing, Supplier Quality, PMO, Finance, Supply Chain, Sourcing, Operations Quality and Regulatory to assure successful execution of the project and keep up to date with new technologies.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Plans, directs and implements all aspects of the company's design and development of new medical device products or software systems.
  • May develop, evaluate, implement and maintain technical quality assurance and control systems or reliability systems and standards pertaining to materials, techniques, or company products.
  • Oversees the investigation and evaluation of existing technologies.
  • Guides the conceptualization of new methodologies, materials, machines, processes or products.
  • Directs the development of new concepts from initial design to market release.
  • Manages feasibility studies of the design to determine if capable of functioning as intended.
  • Monitors documentation maintenance throughout all phases of research and development.
  • Organizes the coordination of activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure timely delivery.
  • Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

Must Have: Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • Requires broad management and leadership knowledge to lead multiple job areas, and detailed functional and operational expertise.
  • Typically has mastery level knowledge and skills within a specific technical or professional discipline with broad understanding of other areas within the job function.
  • Requires a Bachelor Degree in Engineering and minimum of 10 years of relevant experience with 7+ years of managerial experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience with 7+ years of managerial experience.

Nice to Have:

  • Prefer a Mechanical or Electrical Engineering degree.
  • Previous experience in the medical device industry.
  • Advanced engineering degree.
  • Experience in high-volume, electromechanical automated assembly.
  • Experience in regulated manufacturing environment, and ideally medical device industry.
  • Strong problem-solving, risk assessment, and negotiation skills.
  • Experience with complex, cross-functional projects in a matrixed organization.
  • Experience managing projects in a deadline driven environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills.
  • Experience applying situational leadership concepts across various intra and inter-departmental matters
  • Six Sigma Black Belt or Master Black Belt certification
  • Tooling and Equipment lifecycle management experience
  • Experience leading manufacturing operations teams
  • Experience in managing new product launches and product transfer's process
