Job Summary:

The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for developing mechanical systems within Teledyne FLIR’s detection sensor and product lines. This position will design, direct, and coordinate activities related to fabrication, operation, installation, and repair of mechanical or electromechanical products and systems. The desired applicant will apply knowledge of engineering principles to design products and product components using 3D CAD modeling software. Additionally, the engineer will construct and test mechanical CAD designs for form, fit and function using rapid prototyping equipment.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Research and review industry standards and specifications related to Teledyne FLIR’s products and sensors. Understand and support Product Management requirements.
  • Develop 3D CAD mechanical layouts of parts, enclosures, and assemblies based on product specifications, DFMA principles and input from cross-functional team meetings.
  • Work closely with industrial designers and R&D electrical engineers. Assist in electromechanical component selection and testing.
  • Create and test functional prototypes and mock-ups using 3D printers and other fabrication tools and techniques.
  • Present proposed mechanical designs at multi-disciplinary product review meetings.
  • Perform tolerance analysis on mating parts to insure proper fit. Apply knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing to designs.
  • Prepare and create production drawings, documentation and BOM. Apply knowledge of materials, finishes, and manufacturing processes to component and assembly drawings.
  • Review new designs with production engineers and manufacturing personnel to ensure that all aspects of the design are understood.
  • Participate in ECN change processes and/or resolve associated assembly, mechanical and fabrication problems in production.
  • Organize project CAD file metadata and file structures within a PDM system.
  • Monitor and maintain system performance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for system configurations and procedures.
  • Ensure system security and data integrity through regular updates and backups.
  • Develop and manage compliance matrices from government product specifications.
  • Incorporate design for manufacturing (DFM) principles into system designs.

Basic Job Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in mechanical/manufacturing engineering or engineering technology.
  • 5+ years of related working experience in developing mechanical parts, assemblies, and drawings.
  • 2 years working experience using a parametric 3D solid modeling software (SolidWorks preferred).
  • 1 year working experience using PDM software (SolidWorks EPDM preferred).
  • Working knowledge of conventional engineering drawing practices per ASME Y14 standards.
  • Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience with MS office products.

Preferred Job Qualifications:

  • Design knowledge of ruggedized instrument enclosures.
  • Knowledge of injection molding and machine manufacturing.
  • Good mechanical drafting skills.
  • Experience working with 3D printing and 3D print post-processing.
  • Experience with common hand tools, measuring equipment, light machining, and fabrication.
  • Working experience with MRP systems.
  • Knowledge or experience with Adobe Illustrator.
