At Nautilus, we have a big and important mission: improve the health of millions by unleashing the potential of the proteome to accelerate drug development and enable a new world of precision and personalized medicine. We are developing a single-molecule protein analysis platform of unprecedented sensitivity, scale, and ease of use that we believe will democratize access to the proteome – one of the most dynamic and valuable sources of biological insight. To accomplish this, we are pursuing deep, hard science with an entrepreneurial mindset and creating a world-class team of builders, innovators, and dreamers across a wide range of disciplines.
To expand its hardware engineering capabilities, Nautilus is seeking a highly motivated individual with the skills and experience to help bring a complex instrument to the field of proteomics. The successful candidate will collaborate with a cross-functional team of scientists and engineers and play a key role in achieving an exciting and ambitious goal.
Responsibilities
- Hands-on design and integration of electronics, electro-mechanical, electro-optic, fluidic and other integrated systems of the Nautilus platform. Support each stage of the development process from prototype through manufacturing handoff and sustaining activities.
- Participate in cross-functional project teams with scientists, technical support, and other engineers to create appropriate solutions and resolve hardware, software, and firmware issues.
- Collaborate on system design, design reviews, verification and validation testing.
- Utilize Product Lifecycle Management tools to maintain design control.
- Ensure instrument alignment with guidance documents: IEC61010/IEC60101: including EMC/EMI concerns, RoHS compliance and laser safety.
- Conduct board schematics / layout designs (both analog and digital) and associated cable harnesses. Rapidly prototype and qualify new designs. Troubleshoot and verify electronics packaged within tight physical constraints; develop firmware drivers and control software.
- Use CAD & EDA software (preference for Solidworks and Altium Designer)
- Liaison with outside vendor relationships for manufacturing.
- Develop subsystem and system level test strategy; responsible for a broad range of instrument testing, including evaluation of electro-mechanical, fluidic, thermal, and optical subsystems through all phases of development and commercialization.
- Hardware design and coding/scripting of controls for feasibility, characterization, design verification, reliability, lifetime, manufacturing, and service test fixtures
Requirements
- B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering (or an equivalent technical discipline).
- A minimum 4-8 years of experience in hands-on design.
- Prior experience with scientific or medical instrument design, preferred.
- Cross-functional engineering experience required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Software experience in C and Python preferred.
- Hands-on lab skills with shop and test equipment, soldering, breadboarding, prototyping, etc.
- Familiar with designs involving motor controls, sensors, pumps, valves, lasers, power, communication, and microcontrollers.
- Knowledge of common board level electrical bus standards is preferred.
- Experience/ familiarity with microcontrollers.
- Exposure to product development/commercialization and test experience within a risk-control framework is strongly preferred.
- Fast learner, self-motivated, adaptable and willing to take on evolving responsibilities as needed.
- Demonstrated analytical skills and experimental problem-solving skills to understand hardware and software issues and to be able to quickly analyze and resolve system inter-operability problems.
- Demonstrated expertise in Altium, Solidworks, or other similar EDA/CAD design tools.
- Ability to work well under pressure, handle multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
Nautilus Team Culture
