Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Launch and Missile Defense Systems offers an exciting career opportunity for a Sr. Principal Engineer Systems – DTS Systems Engineer (25-275) to join our team of qualified and diverse individuals. This position, located in Huntsville, AL, plays a crucial role in supporting the U.S. President, Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program serves as the integrating element of the Missile Defense System. It is an essential operational system that enables the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, monitor the battle's progression, and dynamically manage designated networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission objectives. C2BMC supports a layered missile defense capability that facilitates an optimized response to threats of all ranges at every phase of flight. C2BMC acts as a force multiplier, globally and regionally networking, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations to enhance performance. Additionally, C2BMC is a vital component of all system ground and flight tests, which verify and exercise the current and future capabilities of the missile defense system.

In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical leadership for the system's DTS development, including identifying technical issues and coordinating across the C2BMC enterprise to resolve these issues. They will also coordinate with associate contractors developing the sim/stim equipment, report status at meetings, and work closely with the test and integration team to provide oversight and direction. Additionally, this candidate will collaborate closely with Task Order management to address work scope questions, identify potential improvements, and assist in planning for follow-on task orders. The candidate will work closely with the customer, addressing questions and concerns.

Essential Functions:

  • The engineer must understand systems engineering, design, development, and integration of systems
  • The candidate should possess prior experience collaborating across organizations to define solutions
  • Must be able to work directly with multiple customers and contractor organizations
  • Excellent communication skills are required (written and oral), along with the ability to convey information effectively and present technical approaches and findings

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field such as Science, Systems Engineering, or Mathematics from an accredited university is preferred, along with 8 years of experience; or a Master’s degree (preferred) in a STEM-related field with 6 years of experience; or a PhD in a related field with 4 years of experience
  • Applicants must possess a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is necessary to start
  • Willingness and ability to travel 10% is required
  • Must have experience in the missile defense domain, including resolving operational and technical issues related to integrating and interfacing sensor and weapon systems (both real and simulated) with Command and Control architectures
  • Must understand systems engineering processes and principles, and have a proven track record of successfully applying these principles to develop product solutions
  • Must possess experience in developing systems engineering artifacts:
    • Specifications
    • Interface Control Documents
    • Use Cases
    • System Architecture Descriptions
    • Trade Studies
  • Familiarity with the application and use of systems engineering tools for requirements management and Object-Oriented requirements definition (e.g., DOORS) is necessary
  • Must have experience collaborating within an integrated team of systems, software, and specialty engineers to develop solutions
  • Must possess a strong background in applying models and simulations to enhance their use in training and exercises
  • Skills required include:
    • Engineering leadership
    • System-of-system definition
    • Integration practices and methods
    • Communicating the desired capabilities to a diverse group of developers, engineers, subject matter experts, and users

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Systems Engineering
  • Certification: INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) Certification
  • Certification: Object Management Group Certified Systems Modeling Professional - Model Builder Fundamental (OCSMP - MBF)
  • Experience with the models used in missile defense, including OSM, MDST, DESim, EADSim, and SSF, is highly desirable
  • Experience in Ballistic Missile defense is highly desired
  • The ability to analyze high-level needs and refine them into an integrated set of requirements that leads to a fielded product, using a structured and logical approach, is desired
  • The ability to lead or carry out parts of the work and guide the activities of other systems engineers is also preferred.
  • Experience in developing training systems is desirable
  • Familiarity with the C2BMC system and other Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) systems is desirable
  • Familiarity with training and exercise methods and systems, particularly those related to missile defense, is preferred
  • Experience with implementing training system solutions in missile defense is desirable
  • Experience using C2BMC processes and methods is desirable
  • Knowledge of C2BMC architecture and implementation is preferred

Additional Northrop Grumman Information:

Salary Range: $131,100.00 - $196,700.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
