We are seeking a skilled HPC Systems Administrator to join our team in West Chester, OH. This role supports cutting-edge research by managing centrally operated HPC, storage, and visualization resources. These resources include advanced hardware and software, expert scientific and technical user support, and training to empower engineers in fully leveraging modern HPC technologies. This role is designed for a motivated professional eager to grow their expertise in system administration, with opportunities to take on increasing responsibility and develop advanced technical skills. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with Linux (Red Hat preferred), strong problem-solving abilities, and a collaborative mindset.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and maintain Linux-based cluster systems (Red Hat preferred), ensuring high availability and performance for multi-user environments.
- Configure and manage user, administrator, and service accounts, maintaining accurate system documentation.
- Troubleshoot hardware, software, and network issues, isolating problems and implementing approved solutions to minimize downtime.
- Install, configure, and update system software, hardware, and services to enhance performance and meet business needs, adhering to change management procedures.
- Monitor system performance using tools like Nagios or Cacti, documenting events and proposing improvements.
- Manage a helpdesk queue, providing initial troubleshooting for basic hardware, software, and networking issues in the HPC environment, as well as account management.
- Perform bare-metal hardware installations (e.g., PXE, manual, or automated OS installs) and apply security hardening (e.g., CIS Benchmarks).
- Collaborate with team members on IT projects, such as system upgrades, migrations, or infrastructure enhancements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 0-3 years of experience in Linux system administration, preferably with Red Hat, including managing users, applications, OS packages, kernel/OS configuration, networks, firewalls, and security hardening.
- Proficiency in scripting with Bash or Python for task automation.
- Basic networking knowledge, including IP addressing, DNS, troubleshooting connectivity (e.g., ping, traceroute, netstat), and configuring firewalls (e.g., firewalld).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive, self-starting attitude.
- Effective communication skills to work with users, support personnel, and team members, explaining complex HPC concepts clearly.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Red Hat Satellite Server for enterprise cluster management.
- Familiarity with multi-factor authentication, Identity Management (e.g., OpenID, LDAP, Kerberos), or configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
- Knowledge of revision control systems (e.g., Git, SVN) and system monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios, Cacti).
- Exposure to Python environment management tools (e.g., Anaconda, pip, Jupyter Notebooks) or programming/troubleshooting Python code.
- Understanding of Layer 2 networking technologies (e.g., VLANs, LACP, STP) or BIND DNS.
- Certifications such as Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or CompTIA Linux+.
