Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Launch and Missile Defense Systems has an exciting career opportunity for a Principal Engineer Systems – Systems Engineer (25-089) to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be in Huntsville, AL.

Relocation Assistance is not available for this position, and this role is on-site with no remote options.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program integrates the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that empowers the U.S. president, secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, collaboratively observe battle developments, and dynamically manage assigned networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission objectives. C2BMC supports a layered missile defense capability, facilitating an optimized response to threats of all ranges in every phase of flight. C2BMC serves as a force multiplier, globally and regionally integrating networks to synchronize autonomous sensors, weapon systems, and operations, thereby enhancing overall performance. C2BMC is essential to all system ground and flight tests, which verify and evaluate current and future missile defense system capabilities.

As a member of the Core Systems Engineering team, the Systems Engineer will work under the direction of the Core Systems Engineering Lead and support various project engineers, interacting with team members, C2BMC management, and government customers to ensure that high-quality products are generated on time and within available resources.

Essential Functions:

  • Will conduct requirements elicitation using behavioral artifacts, such as use cases, which help to understand and communicate the required behaviors and system performance
  • Support the development and review of interface documents, system requirements, Verification Cross Reference Matrix (VCRM) development, architectural documentation, engineering estimates, and conduct both formal and informal engineering reviews
  • The candidate needs to have the ability to be flexible in supporting various tasks on short notice
  • Following DOORS processes and procedures, reviewing the content and details of technical products, and acting as a technical interface to MDA working-level counterparts as needed
  • The candidate will be actively involved in the efforts associated with Agile development, including iteration planning, status updates, and supporting agile team leadership

Basic Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a STEM field such as Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, or Mathematics is preferred from an accredited university, along with 5 years of relevant work experience. Alternatively, a master’s degree in a related STEM discipline is preferred with 3 years of relevant work experience, or a PhD in a related field with 1 year of relevant work experience is acceptable
  • Applicants must hold a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is necessary to start
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 10% to support business needs
  • Must have a solid understanding of systems engineering processes and principles
  • Must demonstrate a proven track record of successfully applying systems engineering principles to develop product solutions
  • Must have experience in eliciting requirements, including using behavioral diagrams as an analytical tool to understand and break down requirements
  • Must have experience developing system engineering artifacts:
    • Specifications
    • Interface Control Documents
    • Use Cases
    • System Architecture Descriptions
    • Trade Studies, etc.
  • Must have experience collaborating in an integrated team environment with other systems, software, and specialty engineers to develop solutions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary, as well as the ability to convey information effectively and present technical methods and findings
  • Capable of drafting and executing engineering plans for a project
  • Must have experience working in an Agile development environment, as well as experience in Systems Analysis, Metric Development, and Architecture development

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in a related STEM discipline and 3 years of related work experience is highly preferred
  • Certification: INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) Certification
  • Certification: Object Management Group Certified Systems Modeling Professional - Model Builder Fundamental (OCSMP - MBF)
  • Missile Defense System prior experience and familiarity are desired
  • Experience with complex Command and Control Systems is desired

Additional Northrop Grumman Information:

Salary Range: $105,400.00 - $158,000.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
