Your role

As a Reporter/Editor in Winnipeg, your primary objective is to perform reporting and editorial assignments related to investigating, researching, gathering, and writing news and current affairs stories in a variety of formats. You will contribute to arts reporting for ICI Manitoba. This is an exciting opportunity to report on the arts, for television, for radio and the web. You will produce and deliver original arts stories with a creative use of sound/video and a diversity of voices. You will also provide up-to-the-minute coverage of arts events. This will require that you develop and maintain contact with a variety of sources, and work closely with your program unit. You will prepare and present news and current affairs reports and programs for CBC/Radio-Canada, including stand-ups, script/clips, news copy, interviews, talk/tapes and other treatments. As required, you will perform other production or administrative duties to ensure that the newsroom, program unit or station runs smoothly.

  • The work schedule may include weekend shifts.
  • Superior French-language skills are required.

Function

Performs reporting and editorial assignments related to the gathering, writing and presentation of program material for French Services. Work is governed by CBC journalistic and programming policies and standards. Advice and guidance are regularly available but there is latitude for initiative and independent judgement. There may be opportunities to coordinate the work of others and close cooperation with the program unit is essential.

For reference purposes, the successful candidate will be mainly assigned to arts coverage.

Key Tasks:

Develops and maintains contacts with a variety of sources

Conducts analysis of facts and information gathered and draws conclusions or raises issues requiring further investigation

Prepares and writes scripts, continuity and headlines

Gathers and reports information from various sources

Decides which elements should be included in an item, their order, length and sequence, as well as the method of transition from one element to another

Contributes ideas or program content; participates in the preparation of program objectives

As required, perform the following tasks:

  • Critically edit material written by others.
  • Determine, in accordance with established routine, the sequence and timing of the elements that make up a newscast which is typically of a predetermined format and for which the majority of content is supplied.
  • Liaise with other staff to ensure required material is available.
  • Select music and effects.
  • Present information and/or analysis on air in a variety of formats.
  • Follow particular areas of current public interest or concern.
  • Perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the newsroom, program unit or station.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to any or all editorial platforms as required.

Exigences

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

Objective Criteria:

  • University degree in journalism or equivalent.
  • Three years of directly related experience that includes proven ability in the field and knowledge of the broadcasting industry.
  • Excellent reporting and interviewing skills.
  • Bilingualism (French-English) is required.
  • Knowledge of Manitoba affairs and Franco-Mabitoban community issues in the cultural scene.
  • Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada journalistic and programming policies.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and on weekends as needed.
  • Understanding of the public broadcaster's role and responsibilities.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.

  • Proven ability to work in a high-stress, tight-deadline environment.
  • Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously.
