We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Variant Scientist to join our clinical molecular and genomic pathology services (MGPS) laboratory in the Division of Pathology in Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. It is a team of ~25 staff members, including dedicated clinical bioinformatics team, variant scientist and 2 full time molecular pathology faculty.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the curation, interpretation, and clinical annotation of somatic and/or germline variants derived from next-generation sequencing (NGS) assays for pediatric and young adult tumors. This role plays a critical part in the production of high-quality, accurate, and clinically relevant genomic reports to guide cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic decision-making.

Hours: M-F 8am-4:30 (flexible) - hybrid flexibility (2-3 days WFH) is possible after onsite training is completed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed review and clinical annotation of genomic alterations (SNVs, indels, CNVs, LOH, fusions) detected using NGS, in accordance with professional society guidelines.
  • Evaluate the clinical significance of variants using established public databases and peer-reviewed literature.
  • Collaborate with molecular pathologists, bioinformaticians, and technologists to support accurate variant calling and interpretation.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of internal variant classification databases and knowledgebases.
  • Prepare high-quality written interpretations for integration into clinical molecular pathology reports.
  • Participate in the validation and implementation of new molecular assays and informatics tools.
  • Maintain current knowledge of molecular oncology, targeted therapies, and biomarker guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory quality control procedures, regulatory requirements, and data security standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 4+ years of high-complexity clinical laboratory experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's Degree in cancer genomics, human genetics, or a related biological science required.
  • PhD preferred, with strong experience in variant analysis and literature review, clinical report writing, correlation of genomic data with pathology and clinical data.
  • At least one year of experience in a diagnostic laboratory setting (CAP accredited, CLIA-certified), including proficiency with variant databases, genome browsers, IGV, and HGVS nomenclature.
  • Knowledge of basic computational methods and tools used in NGS.
  • Familiarity with NGS data formats (e.g., VCF, BAM), and variant annotation tools
  • Familiarity with variant classification guidelines (AMP/ASCO/CAP, ClinGen oncogenicity SOP, AMP/ACMG etc.)
  • Familiarity with WHO tumor diagnostics blue book series for solid tumors and hematologic malignancies.
