Job Summary

We are seeking applicants for a Fall Intern with the non-profit law firm, Wisconsin Judicare Inc.

Monitoring interns work performance and task assignments will done by:

  • Internship Supervisor, Attorney William Harris

Mentoring will be provided by:

  • Legal Advocate Nikki Pretzer & Paralegal Kim Wrecke.

Work will be completed in a hybrid format. Attendance will primarily be in-person; however, online trainings and some tasks may be done remotely.

Application Information

While there may not be an immediate need for a student employee in every area, Northcentral Technical College (NTC) accepts applications regardless, in order to create a pool for when there may be a need. Upon successful submission of your application, you will be considered for future part-time student employee opportunities and your application will be on file as a potential candidate who could possibly fill a position if or when the need arises.

Schedule hours are flexible within the normal Judicare office hours – Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. The expectation is that the Intern will work a minimum of 10 hours and a maximum of 17.5 hours per week (Generally between 2 and 3.5 hours per day).

This position will be paid an hourly rate of $15.00.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Interns will receive mentoring and be expected to perform the following duties during their internship, all under the supervision of an attorney.

Paralegals at Judicare typically do the following:

  • Investigate and gather the facts of a case;
  • Ensure all information is correctly entered into the electronic case management system, currently Legal Server;
  • Schedule events and control the calendars of the attorneys they support;
  • Take responsibility for all incoming and outgoing mail or faxes for the attorneys they support, including producing affidavits of mailing when necessary;
  • Initiate and circulate required case opening documents for review and signatures;
  • Organize and maintain documents in electronic and, sometimes, paper filing systems;
  • Gather and arrange evidence and other legal documents for attorney review and case preparation;
  • Write or summarize case notes to help lawyers prepare for hearings, depositions, negotiations or trials;
  • Draft correspondence to clients and third parties;
  • Draft legal documents, such as stipulations or settlement agreements;
  • Identify and pull relevant court forms and assist clients in completing them;
  • Get affidavits and other formal statements from witnesses, experts and custodians of record that may be used as evidence in court;
  • Help lawyers during trials by handling exhibits, taking notes, or reviewing trial transcripts;
  • Call clients, witnesses, lawyers, and outside vendors to schedule interviews, meetings, and depositions;
  • Call clerks of court to convert cases to electronic case filing, request remote appearance, or obtain information on how to appear remotely;
  • Identify and pull relevant local court rules for various jurisdictions;
  • Occasionally – Represent Judicare at Outreach events;
  • Occasionally - File exhibits, briefs, appeals and other legal documents with the court or opposing counsel;
  • Occasionally- Conduct research on relevant laws, regulations, and legal articles.

Paralegals help lawyers prepare for client meetings, negotiations or mediations, hearings, and trials.

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in at least six credits with a Wisconsin Technical College System Legal Studies/Paralegal Program who can devote 10 hours per week toward the internship.
  • Applicants must be willing to provide high quality service to our low-income and diverse clients, including persons with a disability, living in poverty, or persons with a minority status or affiliation
  • Please note that students are not permitted to work in Federal Work-Study positions during scheduled class times.
  • Interns are expected to have the ability to work online with reliable access to a computer and internet. Familiarity with Microsoft Teams and Zoom.
