The First Year and Family Experience Programs (FYFEP) team is part of the Office of Student Life at Indiana University Bloomington, which fosters a vibrant, supportive campus community where students can thrive inside and outside the classroom. FYFEP plays a key role in helping students and their families navigate the transition to college life by offering engaging programs, strong support systems, and opportunities to build meaningful connections. Through signature initiatives like Welcome Week, CultureFest, and Family Weekend, FYFEP helps lay the foundation for student success from day 1.
Job Summary
The Associate Director for First Year and Family Experience Programs (FYFEP) plays a vital leadership role in shaping and implementing programs that support first-year students and their families during the critical transition to Indiana University Bloomington.
Department Specific Responsibilities
- Reports to the Assistant Dean and Director of FYFEP,.
- Oversees key initiatives, events, and communication strategies while providing supervision and guidance to professional and graduate staff.
- Serves as a collaborative partner across campus to ensure a cohesive and welcoming first-year experience.
- Contributes to the vision, development, and execution of a comprehensive unit focused on programming initiatives that support first-year students¿ transition to Indiana University and the continued engagement of students and families through FYFEP.
- Leads and manages specific FYFEP initiatives and daily operations, advocating for first-year student needs and ensuring alignment with broader departmental goals.
- Collaborates with key campus partners, including academic departments, to support and coordinate major FYFEP events such as Welcome Week, CultureFest, and Family Weekend.
- Supports the development, coordination, and implementation of a comprehensive, year-round communication plan tailored to first-year students.
- Oversees the content creation and timely dissemination of monthly FYFEP e-newsletters for first-year students.
- Leads assessment efforts for assigned FYFEP components, providing data analysis and insights to inform the Assistant Dean¿s broader assessment strategy.
- Provides direct supervision, training, and evaluation for designated full-time staff and/or graduate assistants within the FYFEP team, fostering their professional growth and promoting a cohesive, high-functioning unit.
- Serves as a liaison to designated units within the Office of Enrollment Management and New Student Orientation Programs.
- Represents the Office of Student Life on university committees and task forces as delegated by the Assistant Dean, and work collaboratively with academic liaisons in Undergraduate Education on assigned initiatives.
- Develops and mentors a high-performing professional staff team capable of assuming increasing leadership responsibilities, including by assigning strategic projects, facilitating professional development, and promoting engagement in key unit initiatives.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
General Responsibilities
- Develops and implements programs and initiatives geared at enhancing and reinforcing the academic engagement and experiential learning capacity of the student experience. Projects programming outcomes at the program, department/division, or campus level.
- Interfaces directly with students, attending student programming events and gathering satisfaction feedback from student participants to implement into future student programming initiatives and objectives.
- Collaborates with staff in own department and other departments, as well as academic and campus leaders, on shared student programming goals, often coordinating funding to sponsor student programs.
- Measures and evaluates effectiveness of student programs against projected outcomes; regularly prepares reports on impact to students and budget and presents to stakeholders on effectiveness and to secure funding for initiatives moving forward.
- Serves on committees and performs student programming research across the field of higher education and at peer institutions to identify and recommend best practices.
- Plans and coordinates communications and targeted outreach for student programming initiatives to ensure student participation and inclusion.
- May provide guidance to other Student Programming Specialists; makes process recommendations to manager for improved delivery of service.
- May serve on various campus or cross-functional committees to share student programming best practices.

EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in education, social work, public affairs, counseling, business, or related field
Preferred
- Master's degree in higher education student affairs or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- 5 years in student services, higher education, or related field
Preferred
- 2 years of progressive management experience in a relevant field, including direct supervision of professional staff
- Demonstrates experience in program development, implementation, and evaluation
- Demonstrates experience in full-time staff supervision and mentorship
- Demonstrates experience in developing and mentoring professional staff for increased leadership responsibilities

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

$60,000 - $65,000 annually depending on education and experience
