Academic Advising in the College of Arts + Sciences
We are a team of professional academic advisors and administrators dedicated to providing support and expert guidance to undergraduate students in the College of Arts + Sciences, including the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design; the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies; and The Media School.
College Advising is part of the Academic Engagement and Student Experience team (AESE) in the College, along with the Walter Center for Career Achievement, the College International Programs Office, and the College's Undergraduate Recruiting Team. We are part of a wider community of academic advisors on campus and beyond. Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- The Associate Director of Advising for First Year Programs and Initiatives in the College leads the College of Arts and Science's efforts to create a unique and impactful first year experience for all new undergraduates in the College.
- Plans and administers onboarding experiences for new first-year students in the College of Arts and Sciences to create an enhanced sense of the College as a shared learning community.
- Works with the Advising Leadership Team to ensure consistent advising practices and messaging to students and their families, highlighting the integration of classroom learning, career preparation, undergraduate research and other immersive learning experiences in the College.
- The Associate Director of Advising for First Year Programs and Initiatives in the College will convey a sense of seamless movement from first contact to end of first year for each cohort of new students.
- Collaborates with leadership team members in College Advising and the AESE to create and implement programs, workshops and training that aligns advising practices with the College's vision to integrate undergraduate research, life design, immersive experiences, and career readiness into the experiences of all undergraduate students.
- Develops programming for new students in the College that builds a cohort experience across our majors and schools and creates a shared first-year experience that emphasizes academic success, life design, career readiness, and pursuit of immersive learning experiences.
- With other members of the Advising Leadership Team, plan New Student Orientation activities for newly admitted students that incorporate both academic advising and career coaching elements.
- Partners with the Life Design course coordinator, Student Communications Leader, AESE Operations Team and other College partners to establish a First-Year information hub. Work with marketing to promote the First Year Experience in the College as coordinated, holistic student experience.
- Supervises an assigned group of academic advisors. Hire, train, and supervise Undergraduate Peer Success Coaches.
- Partners with AMES, the Walter Center, and College of Arts and Sciences departments to sponsor exploratory programs for AMES students, introducing them to academic opportunities in the College.
- Works with the AESE Data Analyst to create reports that track student success, retention, and satisfaction with the first-year experience in the College.
General Responsibilities
- Provides operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff members to define academic advising methodologies and standards; provides direction and guidance on high-priority academic advising projects/initiatives.
- Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives, including managing project timelines/deliverables and developing resource plans for multi-project/multi-phase academic advising initiatives.
- Conducts a variety of personnel actions.
- Manages high-level assignments and allocation of academic advising resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that involve staff in other departments/areas/teams; may coordinate large-scale academic advising projects with campus or system-wide implications.
- Makes budgetary recommendations and proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment.
- Researches and stays up-to-date on new industry academic advising standards, technologies, policies, and procedures; responsible for the implementation of new protocols/procedures to address business needs.
- Works collaboratively with other academic advising leaders across departments in recommending standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures.
- Prepares management reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, steering, and advisory committees; acts as consultant to executive committees; serves on various university committees, communities of practice, and task forces related to academic advising.
- Resolves or escalates academic advising related complaints.
Qualifications
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.
EDUCATION
Required
- Master's degree in higher education student affairs, counseling, or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- 4 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or related field. Previous experience in a student-focused, higher education environment is highly desired
- 1 year of management experience or demonstrated leadership of a project or people
Preferred
- 5 years of professional experience in academic advising or a closely related field
- 3 years of academic advising required.
- Advising experience at IU Bloomington and in the College of Arts and Sciences
- College teaching, program development, or supervisory experience

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
