Setups up all equipment and needed articles for each anesthetic procedure in the operating room. Assists anesthesia personnel as necessary. Cleans equipment and replaces used articles after termination of anesthesia. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior. Works under the direct supervision of the Anesthesiologists, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, and/or Anesthesia Charge Person who assign and review work for conformance to policies and procedures.

  1. Follows all rules of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and sterile techniques and policies of department.
  2. Obtains and assembles needed equipment and solutions for daily caseload. Checks all equipment for malfunctions such as leaks. Reports defects and malfunctions to appropriate party in writing.
  3. Assists Anesthesia personnel in elective and emergency cases at anesthetic site by setting up IV fluids with correct tubing, needed drugs, and equipment for each case. Assists Anesthesia personnel as needed with cases; e.g., setting up and passing equipment to provider such as suction and intubation tubes. Moves and retrieves anesthesia equipment in other departments as necessary. Obtains blood products from laboratory in emergency situations.
  4. When needed, assists with patient transfer to surgical table and assists with positioning of patient for procedure. Attaches needed monitoring equipment. Assists until directed to leave. Assists in transfer of patient to PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit) or nursing unit at end of case as needed.
  5. Removes all used articles from anesthetic site upon completion. Discards all disposable material and places re-useable in proper compartments after appropriate cleaning.
  6. Cleans and replaces used equipment. Checks equipment to determine if in proper operating condition. Replaces disposable supplies when required.
  7. Makes daily checks of supply compartment in Anesthesia workroom. Replaces and reorders needed stock including such items as nitrous oxide, and oxygen. Exchanges gas cylinders for anesthesia use. Maintains par levels in anesthesia and epidural carts located in surgical procedure areas including obstetrical operating room sites. Notifies appropriate person of items needing ordering in writing.
  8. Closes rooms at end of day by cleaning and restocking machines and carts; e.g., IV cart, line cart, pediatric cart, airway cart, and malignant hyperthermia cart. Defrosts drug refrigerators and ensures drug refrigerators are set at proper temperature. Checks and maintains special equipment and trays. Maintains Anesthesia workroom and Anesthesia storeroom in clean, organized manner.
  9. Thoroughly cleans carts, machines, and equipment to include all major components, drawers, and canisters according to department policy. Checks and replaces equipment, supplies, and drugs as needed.
  10. Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react effectively, and treatment (if appropriate) unique needs of patient age groups served.
  11. Performs other related duties as required. Utilizes new improvements and/or technologies that relate to job assignment.

High school graduate and/or GED equivalent.

Six (6) months of experience in patient care, anesthesia, or a similarly related field.

Physical health sufficient to enable employee to perform the normally assigned duties of the position such as lifting, bending, stretching, and walking a majority of the workday as well as to work in a rapid pace to keep up with demands of the department.

Emotional health sufficient to withstand observing patients having surgery and anesthesia.

Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.

Ability to function independently and withstand stress in a fast paced environment.

Ability to follow through and complete assignments and duties within the department.

Ability to be opened to change and learning to meet needs of department.

Ability to maintain a courteous and helpful attitude to all Medical Center customers including patients, physicians, visitors, guests, and other employees.
