Divisional Controller

Plano, TX

About the Role:

The Divisional Controller plays a critical role in overseeing the financial operations of the division, ensuring accuracy and compliance with financial regulations. This position is responsible for the preparation and analysis of financial reports, which are essential for strategic decision-making and operational efficiency. The Divisional Controller will lead budgeting and forecasting processes, providing insights that drive financial performance and support business objectives. Additionally, this role involves collaborating with various departments to enhance financial practices and implement effective internal controls. Ultimately, the Divisional Controller will contribute to the overall financial health of the organization, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively and that financial goals are met.

Summary: This position will provide financial leadership over a specific Division’s financial information, working closely to support the General Manager(s) (“GM(s)”) and other Operational Leaders within the Division, by providing the following essential functions for the Unit: 1) internal financial reporting (including month end close responsibilities), 2) operations support & KPI reporting, 3) accounts receivable & collections support, and 4) execution of special projects when needed. This role will also require close coordination with Region Operations Controllers in the dissemination and gathering of information for any consolidated reporting, analysis and forecasting processes.

The Business Unit Controller will help the company meet its financial and operational goals through improved cohesion between Operations, Sales, and Accounting & Finance departments within the Division.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in financial management or accounting roles.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
  • Must be detail-oriented, accurate, flexible, and dependable.
  • Must have excellent analytical skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Willingness to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite of Software (especially Excel).
  • Experience with NetSuite (or other similar ERP systems) is a plus.

Essential functions:

  • Accounts Payable (Vendor), Billing & Accounts Receivable (Customer), and CER[1] Support
  • Provide support to Region Operations Controllers and Operations by working with the accounting department to answer questions from the Ops teams re:
  • Capital expenditure requests (CERs) – Provide support when necessary
  • Customer questions and support (e.g., Billing or AR information), or
  • Vendor (AP) questions and support.
  • Ensure that timely and accurate billing information is provided to the Billing and Accounts Receivable Department for use by Denali’s accounting staff to create and manage Customer Invoices, the Accounts Receivable process, and collections efforts -- when requested by Denali’s Billing & A.R. Department.
  • Provide support to Region Operations Controllers direction for Billing & A.R. Department re: special billings (Customer Invoices), when necessary.
  • Organix pricing model support, working with leadership to support bid models.
  • Provide Project Support as needed. (e.g., support of M&A, FP&A, Audit, system migration, or adjustments, etc.)

Responsibilities:

  • Operations Support & KPI Reporting
  • Understand the KPI reports for all location codes within the Division.
  • Work with General Manager(s), Location Managers, and Region Operations Controllers to understand, define, create, maintain, and improve [daily/weekly/monthly] KPI Report formats and content.
  • Understand any automated data pulls and confirm they are working correctly for reports and perform quality control for individual reports.
  • Provide support of GM(s), other Operational Leaders; and Region Operations Controllers by delivering analysis, special project management, and opportunity review (i.e., opportunities for improved processes, controls, reporting, and analysis needed) suggested by the Operations Team.
  • Financial Reporting Reviews and Corrections (P&L-focused) – Month-end Close Support
  • Ensure accuracy of recorded transactional information through a daily review process.
  • Provide month-end-close support through Income Statement (P&L) analysis by:
  • Owning the initial review of monthly Income Statement reporting for all P&Ls (i.e., location codes) within the Division
  • Proposing to correct/revise journal entry submissions to the Accounting Department.
  • Prepare monthly P&L analysis presentations for the Region Operations Controllers and/or Ops leadership (ie., anticipate questions, and answer them ahead of time).
  • Work with Region Operations Controllers for review and feedback of monthly P&Ls – and incorporate feedback from GM and other Operational Leaders into processes mentioned above.
  • Perform tasks associated with calculating and adjusting inventory balances and cost of goods sold, where applicable.
  • Maintain compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”) and flag any non-compliant items to your manager.
  • Information Flow – Key coordinating point of contact between Region Operations Controllers, Sales, and the Accounting & Finance department
  • Respond to requests for Business Unit accounting information and operational information as needed.
  • Troubleshoot and help find resolution as needed between various Corporate and Division departments (e.g., Ops, Sales, Accounting); conflict resolution for differing priorities or goals.
  • Attend Operations and Sales Meetings as needed with the goal of aiding all stakeholders.
  • Support the efficient and timely submittal (forwarding) to the Denali Corporate Accounting Team of the following information:
  • Purchase Orders (i.e., help make sure the Ops team is submitting POs).
  • Vendor Bills (aka AP-related invoices), with instructions and [routing] information
  • Review Sales information during the monthly close and request any necessary intercompany entries to move revenue to the correct subsidiary and location.
  • Submit for Accounting to process, review, and approve certain monthly or adjusting journal entries that may be required.
  • Cash receipt information
  • Information related to customer credits, vendor credits, etc.
  • Assist on requests for credit applications, new vendor setup, new customer set up, etc.; when necessary.

Skills:

The required skills for this position include strong analytical abilities, which are essential for interpreting financial data and generating accurate reports. Proficiency in financial software and tools is necessary for efficient data management and reporting. Excellent communication skills are vital for collaborating with various departments and presenting financial insights to stakeholders. Leadership skills are also important, as the Divisional Controller will guide a team and influence financial practices across the division. Preferred skills, such as advanced Excel capabilities and experience with ERP systems, will enhance the ability to streamline financial processes and improve overall efficiency.
