The Cerebrovascular Research Lab in University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Neurology invites applications for a post-baccalaureate Research Assistant to conduct computational and clinical research (RA) about ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. This position will gain an in-depth understanding of clinical and imaging techniques for the management of cerebrovascular disease with the opportunity to publish original research articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals pertaining to stroke and neurology.

The Cerebrovascular Research Lab does a lot of image processing and computational fluid dynamic simulations in collaboration with other laboratories.

Responsibilities include:

  • Utilize image processing tools (3D Slicer, MATLAB, VMTK) for computational analysis of brain aneurysms and intracranial plaques.
  • Maintain a high-resolution MRI database of patients with cerebrovascular disease.
  • Aid in the recruitment, enrollment, and 7T/3T MRI acquisition of patients in IRB approved clinical research studies.
  • Prototype 3D anatomical models to simulate flow through brain aneurysms
  • Collaborate with research and industry groups to advance multidisciplinary investigations.
  • Draft and publish manuscripts to summarize key findings of research experiments conducted in the lab.
  • Perform preliminary statistical analysis with the support of statisticians.
  • Manage database collaborations with other institutions through Red Cap and LSS drives.
  • De-identify images and DICOM files to share with other collaborators and databases.
  • Other duties as assigned

Percent of Time: 50%

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm. Hours are flexible as long as clear objectives are achieved.

Location: UIHC Main Campus.

This position is eligible to participate in remote work when completing image processing and coding duties. Remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa. Successful candidates who participate in remote work must comply with requirements of the remote work program and related policies.

Please note: This is a specified term position that will last 12 months. An extension may be reviewed after the initial 12 months but is not guaranteed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in biomedical/mechanical engineering preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal technical communication skills
  • Ability to self-direct and take initiative on new projects
  • Strong organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic understanding of MRI or interest in neuroimaging
  • Basic understanding of mechanical computational analyses such as CFD/FEA
  • Basic understanding of prototyping/fabrication techniques
  • Understanding of HIPPA and IRB human subject policies
  • Studies on computer sciences and/or biomedical engineering.
