Job Description

What is the Opportunity?

We are looking for an adaptable, strategic, forward-thinking and critical-thinking Senior Manager who takes initiative, actively contributes to team discussions, openly shares experiences and ideas, and challenges others’ thinking or approaches in a constructive manner and has enthusiasm for Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) risks and sustainability.

In this role, you will be responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of internal controls, risk management practices and corporate governance processes, and providing assurance over and insights to the Group Risk Management (GRM) ESG Risk team and to the Brand, Marketing, Communications, Sustainability & Impact (BMCS&I) team. Additional responsibilities may include providing assurance support over other areas of GRM. You will also be key member of Internal Audit’s (IA) ESG Centre of Excellence, evolving its strategy and providing ESG risk expertise across Internal Audit and RBC.

This role reports to the Director, Internal Audit, and is part of IA’s broader GRM team.

RBC Internal Audit leverages a unique perspective — with a coordinated view across the entire business — to deliver valuable advice that not only gives assurance, but that illuminates a bigger picture, connects dots, builds best practices and broadens possibilities. We connect intelligence to protect and enable RBC.

What will you do?

  • Assurance and Oversight. Lead, oversee and manage internal audits from planning through to reporting, ensuring audit coverage is adequate for the issuance of an opinion to senior management on internal controls and risk management practices. Execute audit work, drafting, supporting and communicating audit issues; drafting working papers; and assessing management action plans. Use appropriate data analytics to identify and ensure adequate coverage of key risks.
  • Provide continuous risk monitoring, and audit issue verification and resolution and monitor risk identification and mitigation efforts.
  • Support the Director, Internal Audit on ad hoc regulatory engagements for the IA GRM team, including responses, material/document collection, and regulator inquiries.
  • Support the Director, Internal Audit on special initiatives, including annual audit planning, and quarterly platform and audit committee reporting.
  • Strategic ESG Risk Leadership. As a member of the ESG COE, evolve and execute on the ESG COE’s strategic plan, including advising IA teams on integrating ESG risk themes into risk assessments and audit plans, maintaining a forward-looking risk radar to identify emerging ESG risk themes, and sharing ESG risk insights to improve ESG risk management and controls, business strategy, and disclosures.
  • Stakeholder engagement and influence. Maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders ensuring they get maximum value from our engagement work.
  • Maintain strong partnerships with ESG stakeholders including with the GRM ESG Risk, Sustainability & Impact, Finance and Climate Strategy & Governance teams and with key businesses and functions.
  • Lead development and delivery of ESG risk training and presentations across IA. Lead workstreams and collaborations through advisory and capacity building initiatives to foster a culture of ESG risk awareness.

Must have

  • Experience leading and motivating teams towards a common objective. Dedication to collaboration and being a team player.
  • Strong understanding of auditing principles and techniques; excellent project management skills and experience.
  • Ability to be a self-starter, work independently to build new and innovative approaches, while solving difficult and/or ambiguous problems in a complex risk landscape, and seeing them through to solutions.
  • Experience developing training and presentations for executives; excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to effectively interact with senior management.
  • Strong, hands-on knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word and PowerPoint skills). Be well-organized, commitment to quality and accuracy with a high level of attention to detail.

Nice to have

  • Professional accounting or audit certification (CPA and/or CIA preferred)
  • Sustainability and/or climate risk certification or related certifications. Knowledge of environmental and social risk issues, trends and regulations including OSFI B-15, CSRD, ISSB and PRA SS 3/19.
  • Experience in risk management.
  • Experience with strategy development and execution.

What’s in it for you?

  • We thrive on the challenge to be our best, progressive thinking to keep growing, and working together to deliver trusted advice to help our clients thrive and communities prosper. We care about each other, reaching our potential, making a difference to our communities, and achieving success that is mutual.
  • Ability to make a difference and have a lasting impact on climate risk and social risk management
  • A comprehensive Total Rewards Program including bonuses and flexible benefits, competitive compensation, commissions, and stock where applicable
