Work Arrangement

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Manufacturing Build B (Tech Center) Engineering Center and/or our test facility in Pontiac three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business].

The Role

As part of our Zero, Zero, Zero mission we have established an Autonomous Robotics Center within Vehicle Systems which leads the robotic development and planning for industry leading next generation of robots for use within all centers at General Motors. This is an extremely exciting and challenging opportunity to play a key role in our automation solutioning activity within GM with respect to our current and future activities as we move forward towards industry 4.0.

This key contributor will help develop and validate Optimization Automation solutions to safely delivery on our overall 4-wall Material strategies. Aggressive, fast-moving solution development thru collaboration with other critical SMEs will be key to the Automation Development Engineer’s success.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Identify and evaluate emerging manufacturing technologies, trends, and best practices to drive innovation and improve operational performance.
  • Work in parallel with a supplier to develop our AFT (Automated Fork Truck) technology to MRL (Manufacturing Readiness Level) 6
  • PFMEA, Product Manufacturing Specifications, Functional and Use Case Validation with respect to Safety to MRL 8
  • Working in parallel with the ARC execution team to insure a clean hand off for pilot automation for deployment in plant.
  • Develop and implement strategies focused on optimizing material flow and contribute to the development of automation roadmap with timing and cost considerations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including the Autonomous Robot Center (ARC) product design team, Software Development, Manufacturing Innovation Team, Shop Directors, and other Manufacturing Engineering Center Leads to identify areas for improvement and develop innovative solutions to enhance manufacturing efficiency, quality, and sustainability.
  • Work directly with strategic suppliers to invent, develop and execute material optimization initiatives.
  • Work directly with partners and safety team to achieve development of material optimization initiatives from drawing board/concept to reality/shop floor.
  • Work directly with containerization, logistics and other GPSC partner to resolve critical issues and put key enablers in place for the successful execution of material optimization initiatives.

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • 3+ years of professional experience in an advanced technology manufacturing environment.
  • Previous experience in manufacturing operations, process improvement, and innovation management.
  • Key experience leading material transformation – new technologies, material flow, material handling equipment automation, and Factory of the Future Material concepts.
  • Understanding of 2D and 3D LiDar and Stereographic Vison systems with respect to variable safety fields.
  • Mechanical and Electrical proficiency, with an understanding of mechanical and electrical systems and components.
  • Fundamental understanding of Safety Rated Controls systems.
  • Understanding of Odometry and Localization technologies
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field OR equivalent experience
