The Opportunity:

WSP currently has an opportunity for an Intermediate Process Water/Wastewater Designer in the Process Water/Wastewater Group, with office locations across Ontario, and in Montreal, Quebec. The successful candidate will assist the Process Water/Wastewater Group with local and international industrial water and wastewater treatment projects in a variety of sectors including food processing, mining and manufacturing. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in renewable energy (waste-to-energy) projects, as well as groundwater remediation and treatment projects.

The Process Water/Wastewater Group is a close-knit group of industry professionals, with team members ranging from 30 years of experience, to less than one. The team provides specialized design services for clients with unique challenges, with project locations across the globe. The team has expertise in traditional physical-chemical, aerobic, and anaerobic wastewater treatment, as well as emerging contaminants and practices, including the treatment of PFAS, and the development of renewable natural gas resources from waste digestion.

What you can expect to do here:

You will be required to work on all phases of project execution under the guidance of experienced Project Managers and Senior Engineers. Responsibilities may include:

  • Designing, coordinating and executing field sampling programs and data collection
  • Conducting feasibility studies and options evaluations with limited oversight
  • Assist with preliminary design, detailed design, troubleshooting and operations support for both new and existing facilities under the guidance of senior engineers
  • You will be expected to lead the preparation of small- and medium-sized proposals, cost estimates and reports, and complete design calculations and design drawings with limited guidance
  • Working with other engineering disciplines
  • Delegating work to Junior staff and providing guidance for task completion
  • Assist with management of small projects including task execution, maintaining project schedule, communication with clients and management of expectation, and management of scope change

Typical project phases and tasks may entail the following:

  • Design of industrial wastewater treatment systems; including wastewater characterization, bench and pilot-scale treatability evaluations, Mass Balance, PFD, and P&ID development, production of detailed engineering drawings and specifications, construction supervision, and commissioning
  • Economic and technical evaluation of treatment technologies
  • Design, specification, and tendering of major process equipment purchases
  • Economic and technical evaluation of specific treatment equipment
  • Water and waste reduction audits that focus on source reduction and water recycling
  • Permitting and regulatory submittals
  • Field and laboratory work (sampling, bench and pilot-scale treatability)

You will be encouraged to take on new responsibilities, engage new clients, and bring forward new ideas for growing or optimizing the business. What you’ll bring to WSP:

You will possess an undergraduate degree in civil, chemical, or environmental engineering. You will have more than 4 years of experience in relevant industries, including industrial wastewater and water treatment design, facility operation, process-mechanical design, etc. The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a team player with willingness to travel
  • Have strong verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Possess a robust common-sense approach to problem solving
  • Capable of working independently and managing workload
  • Be resourceful, self-motivated and proactive
  • Eligible for licensure with Professional Engineers of Ontario (EIT or P. Eng.)
  • Be enthusiastic to engage with the team, and seek out new and exciting opportunities
  • Possess a valid Ontario Class-G license

Additional desirable qualifications include:

  • Experience in industrial sectors, including: food processing, mining, automotive, chemical, pharmaceutical, metal finishing, petroleum, and general manufacturing
  • Previous experience in consulting industry
  • Interest in project & client management
  • Familiarity with REVIT & ACAD
  • GPS-X or BioWin capabilities
  • Bilingual (French and English)
  • Advanced degree in engineering (Masters)
