FMC Corporation

Overview

The FMC Investigative Sciences Group is looking for a highly motivated individual to work in our Newark, Delaware, research facility. The successful candidate will support the Structure Elucidation Team providing structure elucidation/verification and quantification support to discovery and process chemistry, formulations development, regulatory science, and operations. Qualified candidates must have experience solving structures of small molecules using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Mass Spectroscopy. Experience in other spectroscopic techniques like FT-IR and UV/Vis as well as in sample fractionation by liquid chromatography are highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize one- and two-dimensional NMR methods for structure elucidation/verification of small molecules.
  • Utilize quantitative NMR to determine the purity of various chemicals.
  • Utilize preparative HPLC and solid phase extraction instrumentation to isolate low-level unknowns for structural studies by NMR and MS.
  • Utilize FT-IR for characterization of reference standards, raw materials, adjuvants, unknowns, etc.
  • Conduct routine and non-routine analyses of various samples to meet project needs.
  • Generate summaries and reports for GLP and non-GLP studies.
  • Manage lab safety and industrial hygiene aspects, including proper waste disposal procedures, to maintain a highly efficient and productive laboratory.
  • Perform routine cryogen fills for the NMR magnets.
  • Interact with a diverse customer base on a variety of projects/tasks.

Required Education

Ph.D. degree in Chemistry or a related discipline with 0-2 years of industrial experience or MS with 6+ years of industrial experience.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated expertise in structure elucidation of small molecules by 1D- and 2D-NMR and LC-MS.
  • Experience working with Bruker NMR spectrometers.
  • Practical experience with FT-IR, UV/Vis and liquid chromatography.
  • Capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated problem-solving, and instrument troubleshooting skills.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience managing multiple demands in a timeline driven environment.

Additional Beneficial Experience

  • Experience with various data acquisition and analysis software packages (TopSpin, ACD/Labs, MNova, KnowItAll, OpenLab-ChemStation, IDBS ELN, etc.) and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Familiarity working in GLP environments.
