DuPont has a challenging opportunity for a motivated and talented individual to join our team as a Run Plant Engineer at the Ion Exchange Resins manufacturing facility in Midland, Michigan. As part of DuPont's Water and Protection portfolio, the Water Solutions business provides purification and separations technology into multiple market channels. Ion Exchange Resins are primarily used for water purification, food & beverage processing, and pharmaceuticals manufacturing. These resins are also heavily used in power generation facilities that supply electrical power to consumers around the world.

The City of Midland is located in the beautiful Great Lakes Bay Region in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, about 125 miles northwest of Detroit. Reporting to the Unit Manager, this is a highly impactful and vital role that provides resources for the operating team by applying technical skills to optimize plant operations, resolve plant problems, and enable safe and efficient production of low cost, quality products. The individual is key in developing the appropriate short interval control metrics, operating discipline, training, and work processes to maximize value to the business. Another important aspect of the role is utilizing process and engineering knowledge, coupled with input from other business subject matter experts, to identify, prioritize, and assist in the execution of plant improvement projects to increase performance via equipment and process control optimization. This role at times will also serve as the manufacturing representative for capital projects to install new capabilities and/or add capacity at the facility. A continuous improvement mindset and toolbox (MAIC, LEAN) are important attributes for success in the role.

Influential leadership is required of this position in the form of championing adherence to the life critical safety standards, strong procedure use, and time spent in the field observing worker behavior and working with operations and maintenance personnel. This role will also lead root-cause investigations in response to unplanned events, and with their cross-functional teams, propose and implement strong corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

This role represents an excellent opportunity for an engineer to develop key global competencies and be exposed to numerous unit operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify, scope, and collaborate with improvement engineer to prioritize and implement process improvement initiatives.
  • Earn respect and trust of operations team because of their great problem-solving skills and technical expertise.
  • Elevate and appropriately apply knowledge of their plant and technology – study historical data and convene with Manufacturing Technology (MT) team.
  • Work with MT and maintenance to ensure equipment replacements and improvements are aligned with DuPont specifications.
  • Work closely with MT/Process Automation team to ensure process automation is used as a tool to optimize plant performance.
  • Partner with the experts to perform advanced troubleshooting and improve operating discipline. Diagnose and document root causes of asset utilization losses in the facility.
  • Understand why specific procedure steps and precautions are needed and keep a strong field presence to reinforce the importance.
  • Supports plant roles in procedure usage, creation, reviews, updates and approvals.
  • Conduct daily review of logbook, alarm history and process trends to better understand the plant operation and stay engaged with daily activities. Maintain, own, and review daily KPIs/ trends to ensure optimum performance.
  • Own the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (TEEP/OEE) data collection, validation and reporting, then driving resolution of opportunity gaps.
  • Respond urgently to plant issues and emergencies. Act as a unit technical expert during unplanned events and drive implementation of effective corrective and preventative actions.
  • Assists with implementation of all aspects of process safety including process hazard analysis, layers of protection analysis, and loss prevention principle application.
  • Provide leadership, expertise, diagnosis, and optimization in plant Raw Material Efficiency, which may include yield or waste generation.
  • Ensure compliance with plant operating permits.
  • Understand site integration and provide input to optimize the overall system.
  • Work with the plant Production Coordinator business Supply Chain Scheduler to effectively utilize and optimize the plant’s capacity and product mix.
  • Participate in the plant on-call rotation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Engineering is required. Chemical or Mechanical Engineering preferred.
  • Skilled in the use of MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) required.
  • A minimum of 6 months of engineering experience in a manufacturing and/or design capacity preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in continuous improvement methodologies (eg. Six Sigma, LEAN, etc) preferred.
  • Experience with Aspen IP21, ABB 800xA, SAP, and VBA are strong assets, but training will be provided.
  • Strong technical, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills are required to be successful in this job.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills; must work well in both self-managed and team environment.
  • Process Safety Management Experience in a High Hazard Process facility.
  • Ability to set priorities and provide direction to influence management and broader organization.
  • Experience in manufacturing or chemical industry.
  • Proven ability to apply technical knowledge to diagnose, troubleshoot, solve equipment and/or process issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize and manage multiple, complex, time-sensitive projects.
