The Automation Manager will be responsible for managing, leading, and developing the cross-functional engineering team, which is responsible for engineering of complex automation systems including but not limited to robotic work cells, conveyance, machine vision, and custom engineered solutions for material handling. This position will also use the operational data and requirements to create a concept design and lead the detailed engineering development of automation systems which will be installed across CTDI’s Distribution Center network.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage multidisciplinary team of engineers including system design, mechanical engineering, controls engineering and software development.
  • Provide leadership to engineering team ensuring proper competencies and capacities are in place to manage multiple project activities.
  • Conduct design and code reviews with engineers to ensure the engineering development meets internal department standards.
  • Build and develop the skillset of engineering team through internal training, conduct onboarding and provide mentorship to new engineers.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Program management and leadership team regarding engineering development roadmap & project schedule and deliverable expectations.
  • Work with and manage vendors, and contractors for timely delivery of parts & equipment, service agreements and cost control.
  • Lead the engineering team to meet the technical documentation requirements; to provide operational & troubleshooting manuals for operations team.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Experience with project management methods, practices and tools including scoping, facilitations, delegation, and risk management best practices.
  • Understanding of application of material handling automation equipment and technology for the material movement with a distribution center.
  • Demonstrated experience in using Jira or Microsoft Project as a central project management tool for the documentation and coordination of project work, resource, and schedule management.
  • Proven track record in leading cross functional teams in project development and commissioning involving mechanical, electrical and software engineering.
  • Experience in managing vendors, suppliers, contractors & fabricators.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead engineering development and manage engineering teams.
  • 4+ years of experience in engineering / Automation designs & implementation.
  • 2+ years of project management, engineering management or equivalent experience.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • A strong machine design background with knowledge of industrial automation and material handling technologies.
  • General understanding and experience in material handling, fulfillment, and warehouse operations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel for data analysis.
  • Experience with CAD software preferred.
  • Experience with Conveyors, PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and Robots preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to create and present powerpoint presentations to management & leadership teams.

Educational Requirements

  • Preferred bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (BSME) or Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an accredited college or university.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Standard office environment.
  • Engineering/manufacturing lab environment.
  • May require travel.
