The Senior Engineer is responsible for implementing and enhancing testing, development, and validation techniques, processes, tooling, and instruments to optimize engine product quality. This position reports to the Product Development Engineering Manager in Test & Development Engineering China, IPSD. The primary responsibility is project execution to manage (and execute) the validation test (projects) at the Caterpillar R&D Center in Wuxi, China. This includes overseeing test procedures, execution, quality control, data analysis, troubleshooting, and reporting. The role involves collaborating with global cross-functional teams to understand requirements, gather demand signals for planning, communicate progress, and report results. Major components for validation include Cylinder Heads, Cylinder Blocks, Liners, Crankshafts, and other parts of Caterpillar Engines.

What You Will Do:

  • The incumbent will lead, direct, advise, and teach engineers and technicians in performing tasks such as utilizing data acquisition systems, analyzing data, and setting up tests to execute component validation projects with the required quality and efficiency.
  • Key activities include project planning, writing test procedures, ensuring correct test execution according to requirements, troubleshooting test or product issues, and maintaining close communication with global cross-functional teams, including L3 design engineers, Supplier Development Engineers, the Product Engineering team, and Test & Development Engineering operations.
  • Collaboration and communication with various stakeholders for planning, re-planning, and setting priorities are essential.
  • Deep expertise of Test Procedures, test setup, technical problem solving, pass/fail criteria and assessment.
  • This position will have a dotted line reporting relationship to the Core Component Team at the Tech Center in the US, ensuring that procedures, data quality, test plans, and reports are globally aligned.
  • The role demands a sense of urgency and strong customer-facing communication skills under pressure.
  • The incumbent will manage the budget and costs within the annual budget plan and rolling updates.
  • Planning and improving testing procedures and operations to make tests more reliable, efficient, and cost-effective.

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidate must have a master’s degree or a four-year engineering degree with least 5 years work experience in any of the following areas: validation, design, testing and/or analysis.
  • Requires a degree in an accredited Mechanical Engineering, or Materials Science curriculum or equivalent experience working in an Engineering function.
  • Demonstrated excellent project management skills.
  • Ability to manage team budget and cost.
  • Strong initiative, good communication skills and an understanding of customer needs and product application are a must, as well as excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Innovative, staying abreast of the latest technology, with a curiosity for generating ideas to advance testing and problem solving technologies.
