Salary Range: Up to $99,000/Annualized, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Essential Functions

Job Summary

Under minimal supervision and with limited and considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment, coordinates physical changes to computer databases; codes, tests, and implements physical database. Direct and manage database administration staff.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Provides leadership and oversees the specifications acquisition, development, and implementation of emerging database technology solutions for use by administrative, student services offices, and faculty.
  2. Functions as the technical lead in advising management on matters of university databases and technologies to support the university’s faculty, staff, and students. Delegates assignments, and provides leadership, and on-the-job supervision to assigned full-time and part-time personnel.
  3. Sets up, monitors, and maintains disaster recovery solutions for enterprise production databases.
  4. Architects, manages, tests, and provides support to multiple enterprise-wide database systems and applications.
  5. Designs, creates, installs, and maintains highly available and secure enterprise database instances to include database architecture, database backups, creation of databases, and database objects to support enterprise-level applications like Student Information System.
  6. Provides for the training, direction and career development of assigned personnel.
  7. Provides effective communication and sustains positive customer relationships with all offices and departments at UTSA.
  8. Exercises independent judgment based on extensive technical or specialized knowledge and experience.
  9. Maintains the reliability of databases by developing and implementing standards and/or processes for database maintenance, documentation, and configuration.
  10. Leads efforts to proactively manage the performance, optimization, integrity, and security of institutional databases and systems like SIS. Ensures databases are monitored and appropriate measures/actions taken to ensure the integrity of the databases to include security and privacy issues.
  11. Works closely with other UTS staff to advise and to provide direction regarding the delivery of IT services as related to databases to the university.
  12. Establishes and maintains departmental operational standards, procedures, and programming conventions.
  13. Ensures maximum effectiveness of all assigned work groups by maintaining a proper organizational structure. Recruiting, hiring, training, and promoting staff while identifying problem areas and quickly resolving those.
  14. Responsible for planning about database and application environment to include database capacity planning, processing, capacity, storage capacity, backup capacity, and future needs/requirements.
  15. Projects long-range requirements for database administration in conjunction with other managers in the information systems function as well as business function managers.
  16. Manages and reports project status and progress using the UTSA UTS methodology.
  17. Develops work plans and track project progress, including risks, issues, and resources to deliver successfully. Aligns plans with strategic goals and objectives.
  18. Consults on server design; coordinates changes to server applications, Leads DBA team in managing successful database and application upgrades and implementations of existing and emerging technologies.
  19. Schedules and performs installation and upgrades of enterprise-level databases and applications and maintains them under established Information Technology policies and procedures.
  20. Conducts routine audits of enterprise databases and systems to ensure compliance with established standards, policies, and configuration guidelines.
  21. Ensures creation and maintains documentation of the university database environment.
  22. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university within an area of assigned responsibility.
  • Technical training and/or experience may be substituted for a degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • Five or more (5+) years of experience working/ administering enterprise-level databases like Oracle and MSSQL including four (4) years of supervisory or management experience leading a DBA team.
  • Experience with systems like Student Information System, Appworx, and Xtender.
  • Experience managing initiatives using generally accepted project management practices and processes acting as a technical/project lead supporting enterprise-level database administration.
  • Proficiency with systems design, programming, and scripting is required.
  • Program system support tasks in C Java, Perl, batch/shell, Power Shell, or other general-purpose programming languages; perform complex performance analysis including databases and system processes.
  • This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UTSA and its infrastructure.

  • Basic understanding of clerical procedures and systems such as recordkeeping and filing.
  • Demonstrated independent decision-making and problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Working Conditions

Working Environment:

  • Office environment with occasional work in a data processing environment.
  • Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions, or other business-related events.
  • Occasional after-hours and weekend work or overtime may be required.

Physical Demands:

  • Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required, only occasionally.
  • Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally.

This position primarily works remotely in Texas but may work on campus on an infrequent basis (approximately four days or less per month). When an employee is required to work on campus, travel and parking expenses are the employee’s responsibility. Applicants must be adaptable and open to working in both environments.
