Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP) supports Member States in building and strengthening their capacity to combat maritime crime. GMCP operates through several pillars, each addressing a specific area of focus. One of the key pillars is the Legal Pillar, which is based at the Regional Office for Eastern Africa (ROEA) in Nairobi, Kenya. This pillar has a proven track record in providing technical assistance to enhance prosecution and adjudication of maritime crime cases in the region. The GMCP Legal team has an active programming presence in the following countries: Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Tanzania, Seychelles, South Africa, and Somalia. As part of its capacity-building efforts, the Legal Pillar is offering an internship opportunity for recent graduates seeking entry-level experience and exposure in the field of maritime crime. This internship is based in Nairobi, Kenya, and is hosted by the UNODC Regional Office for Eastern Africa and Internship is UNPAID. Duties are stipulated below:- Assist in the preparation of background papers, briefings, presentations, talking points, and speeches. Assist during technical assistance workshops, stakeholder meetings, high-level events, and conferences. Assist to take detailed notes during meetings. Perform additional tasks in support of the programme’s objectives, as needed.

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above)(OFFICIAL PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY IN SUPPORT OF ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS HAS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION) The intern should also: • Be computer literate in standard software applications; • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
