Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Director Food & Nutrition or designated supervisor, the Assistant Nutrition is responsible for menu delivery, assisting patients with meal selections based on approved dietary orders. Verifies and enters orders into the dietary menu system. Maintains communications from patient care units and patients to nutrition and dietetics to ensure efficient and accurate delivery of meals.
Job Details
- Delivers and picks up menus from patients and patient care units. Explains meal selection procedure to new patients. Obtains patient preferences/dislikes and other information to ensure quality food delivery to patients.
- Assists patient with menu selections. Meets face-to-face with assigned patients to verify meal selections based on established schedule or as required. Offers various food options based on patients diet order and availability from kitchen.
- Enters the appropriate information into hand-held system. Reviews entries for proper adherence to dietary orders. Follows up with patients if menu selections appear incomplete or insufficient.
- Updates patient lists to verify meal selections or diet order changes.
- Checks trays for accuracy of meal order prior to meals going to patient rooms and patient care units.
- Runs tray tickets for meal service. Compares diet list with tray tickets to ensure all patients receive designated tray.
- Adjusts tray tickets with noted changes and verifies with RD if necessary.
- Monitors computer messages and follows through on all requests. Notifies appropriate staff.
- Provides excellent service to patients and customers. Meets customer needs, expectations and demands quickly and effectively. Remains calm and professional. Receives complaints from customers and takes action to remedy the complaints.
- Answers phone with a friendly tone and follows up on all messages. Performs a variety of clerical duties. Runs lists and worksheets and distributes to staff. Assists in the inventory and storage of menus and other items. Maintains a neat, clean, organized work area.
- Supports Relationship-Based Care efforts. Assists in departmental quality improvement projects through participation in patient surveys and/or department task teams.
- Assists in the training of new staff and students training in the field.
- Prepares items for unit orders and stocks supplies as needed for unit(s). Fills orders from inventory with proper documentation for charging. Adheres to order amounts and standard stock levels.
- Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements.
- Follows hospital and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress code and display of ID badge, and safety.

Education:
- High School Diploma/General Education Development (GED).
Certifications:
Complexity of Work:
- Proficient in the use of basic computer software applications.
- Basic typing/keyboarding ability.
- Strong customer service ability.
- Good verbal and written communication skills including the ability communicate clearly and positively to patients and staff when conveying information.
- Ability to work productively and effectively in a fast paced work environment with a sense of urgency and enthusiasm.
- Ability to develop and maintain professional and positive working relationships with patients, managers, nursing and other staff.
Work Experience:
- Ability to understand dietary terms and information.
- Six (6) months of dietary experience is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift 30 lbs or more.
