What will you be doing!

  • Providing Fire Protection Expertise:
    • Completing fire safety assessments associated with the fire protection screening process, including the identification and interpretation of code requirements.
    • Completing or reviewing Fire Hazard Analysis (FHA) as required. Conducting and reviewing fire hazard analyses and other fire safety documentation for compliance with applicable requirements.
    • Describing the conditions to consider when inspecting and testing fire protection systems to be able to verify or validate design features. Assisting with preparing/reviewing of the inspection, testing and maintenance procedures for fire equipment/systems in accordance with the applicable codes and standards.
    • Conducting project inspections and witness tests of buildings and fire protection systems to determine compliance with plans and specifications, as well as applicable standards and regulations.
    • Assisting with oversight of the site's fire protection and fire department emergency services programs and their implementation.
    • Reviewing the adequacy of contractor fire protection programs, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, regulations, Departmental Orders, standards, guides, and accepted “Improved Risk” practice.
    • Providing technical expertise for the improvement of Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) fire protection equipment/systems (best technology) and their suitability for protection from fire.
    • Assisting with fire investigations and other accident/incident investigations as required.
    • Planning and organizing meetings and projects within the fire service and external groups. Representing the fire protection program at fire protection meetings, professional conferences, or other related committee meetings.
    • Maintaining proficiency in fire protection engineering and fire department emergency services concepts and practices through continued education, training, and periodic review of fire protection codes and standards.
  • Fire Protection Engineering Services:
    • Evaluating and reviewing requests for fire safety exemptions and equivalencies.
    • Preparing engineering documents, including Design Requirements, Design Descriptions, Work Activity Plans, Test Plans, and Test Reports.
    • Completing engineering calculations, supporting and confirming the adequacy of detailed designs.
    • Advising as to fire protection requirements to be incorporated in the design and construction of buildings and structures, and fire protection systems.
    • Reviewing plans and specifications to determine compliance with the fire protection requirements of applicable standards and regulations.
    • Working as part of a team designing fire protection systems.
    • Reviewing formal engineering drawings, ensuring they convey the engineering design intent.
    • Evaluating the adequacy of fire protection system designs in accordance with applicable fire protection criteria and recommending changes as applicable.
    • Providing guidance based on fire protection engineering principles concerning the use of materials, appliances, systems, equipment and methods of design or construction procedures that are not specifically described by codes and standards, or that vary from the specific requirements in codes and standards, or for which no recognized test procedure has been established.
    • Providing engineering services in support of fire investigation activities, assisting in determining causes and effects.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Bachelor’s degree (Honours) in Engineering or Applied Science from a university of recognized standing.
    • A degree in Fire Protection, Mechanical, Electrical or Civil Engineering is preferred.
    • Education qualifications must be eligible for licensure as a Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO)
  • Experience
    • Two or more years of experience working on fire protection systems or design is preferred.
    • Registered with Professional Engineers Ontario; OR holds P.Eng. status in Canada. (P.Eng. license can be transferred within provinces in Canada).
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Ability to identify and evaluate potential fire hazards and risks.
    • Understanding of relevant codes, standards, and regulations governing fire safety.
    • Ability to analyze fire safety documentation for compliance and effectiveness.
    • Ability to create, review, and maintain detailed fire safety documentation.
    • Ensuring accuracy and completeness in fire safety assessments and documentation.
    • Ability to evaluate requests and assess their impact on fire safety.
    • Ability to effectively communicate findings and recommendations regarding exemption requests.
    • Ability to plan, organize/coordinate meetings and projects within the fire service and external groups.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage deadlines.
    • Ability to pay attention to detail, and be a team player.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills, technical documentation and reporting, and risk assessment and mitigation.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
