General Responsibilities:
- To act as the primary U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) School Certifying Official.
- To keep VA informed of the enrollment status of veterans and dependents and to keep State Approving Agency (SAA) informed as required.
- To assist VA students in applying for benefits, and to maintain records of VA students and make records requested by VA/SAA available for inspection.
- To remain up to date on current VA rules and benefits, and to attend required VA conferences to remain up to date on all VA changes.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
- Audits student academic files and performs enrollment audits on a weekly basis to ensure compliance with VA requirements. Audits student financial files to alleviate possible debt issues between the VA and UAB.
- Identifies and resolves all problems unique to the veteran student population and/or dependents of veterans and serves as the primary contact for the general public, University personnel and officials at all levels within the VA regarding veteran services issues.
- Maintains files on each VA benefit recipient in accordance with VA regulations.
- Monitors GPA for verification of eligibility status and monitors other financial aid awards to avoid overpayments in accordance with federal and institutional policies. Page 2 of 3
- Utilizes the VA Once database to ensure students receive maximum GI Bill benefits and enters all student status changes to meet the 30-Day reporting rule. Identifies courses where no grade was given and makes appropriate adjustments based on VA and UAB policies. Counsels students on how their academic progress and standing affects their GI Bill certification.
- Ensures that the documents used to certify for educational benefits are authenticated. Ensures that student status information within the University's student information system and the VA Once database are in agreement.
- Reports graduation, retention, and all VA compliance reports to leadership as required for VA Compliance. Verifies GI Bill payments received by the US Treasury to ensure accuracy prior to authorizing release of payment to the student account.
- Counsels students/dependents, parents concerning eligibility and the benefits available to them through VA educational programs. Serves as the university contact person for the National Guard and Reserves concerning Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE), GI Bill Kicker Contracts, Tuition Assistance and Army National Guard Education Assistance Program (ANGEAP).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Salary Pay Range: $43,890 - $71,320
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may substitute for education requirement.
