The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics, is seeking an experienced Researcher Senior to join their team. Inviting applications for a highly motivated and skilled Research Senior to lead and support studies on deregulation of serine/threonine kinases and phosphatases in diverse cancer models. This individual will play a central role in advancing both basic and translational research aimed at identifying novel therapeutic strategies targeting signaling pathways that are mediated by serine/threonine kinases and phosphatases. The successful candidate will be an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, with responsibilities including experimental design, execution, data analysis, grant writing, and scientific communication. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge cancer research and structural biology, with the potential for high-impact discoveries in kinase and phosphatase biology.

General Responsibilities

As a Researcher Senior, you will have expanded responsibilities, overseeing complex or multiple research projects and providing strategic direction. This professional-level role involves mentoring junior researchers, managing project budgets, and ensuring the integrity and quality of research outcomes. Your expertise will be critical in guiding experimental design, data interpretation, and contributing to high-impact publications. Depending on the research focus, this position may involve research collaborator contact, research animal contact, and/or specimens.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Develop and maintain cancer patient-derived organoids for preclinical modeling and therapeutic testing.
  2. Design and conduct in vitro and in vivo assays to assess the efficacy, mechanisms of action, and pharmacodynamics of novel cancer therapies.
  3. Collaborate on research projects investigating serine/threonine kinases and phosphatases, including co-culture studies of cancer and immune cells to evaluate tumor immune interactions.
  4. Analyze and interpret complex datasets using appropriate statistical and computational methods.
  5. Prepare scientific outputs, including manuscripts, grant applications, and presentations, and present findings at national and international conferences.
  6. Lead or coordinate team projects, including mentoring junior staff and facilitating collaborative efforts.
  7. Contribute to funding efforts through grant writing and may engage in research involving human participants, animal models, and/or biological specimens.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Range: $ 60,835- $ $79,000

Qualifications

Doctorate degree in a related field OR Master's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience OR Bachelor's degree in related field and four (4) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

  • Doctorate degree in cancer biology, molecular biology, pharmacology, or a related biomedical field. Postdoc experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise in cancer biology, therapeutic development, and basic /translational research.
  • Proven experience with organoid cultures, immune-tumor co-culture systems, and animal models.
  • Strong background in data analysis, scientific writing, and presentation.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Prior experience in project leadership and/or grant writing is highly desirable.
