We are currently seeking a High Voltage & Battery Systems Engineer focusing on battery safety. This position requires an experienced professional with a strong understanding of high voltage system safety and implementation for the automotive environment. Our ideal candidate exhibits a can-do attitude, and approaches work with vigor and determination. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate excellence in their respective fields, to possess the ability to learn quickly and to strive for perfection within a fast-paced environment.

Role:

  • Contribute to the product strategy and roadmap to ensure Lucid HV systems are state of the art with respect to safety and reliability.
  • Stay up to speed with the rapid evolution of safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Help develop Lucid safety goals and due care targets that go above and beyond regulatory requirements.
  • Develop concept of operations for different safety features within the RESS.
  • Work closely with simulation and design teams to explore tradeoffs and innovative design solutions.
  • Support the development of 1D modeling tools to optimize design parameters.
  • Work closely with the design team and track changes during prototype and serial life phases.
  • Own and develop the RESS safety validation test plans.
  • Support the battery abuse test team in building DOEs to acquire high-quality data.
  • Monitor the planning of RESS testing, data acquisition, and database organization to ensure that the RESS validations are delivered in a timely manner with respect to project milestones.
  • Analyze abuse test data and effectively communicate the key RESS performance parameters.
  • Work closely with homologation, crash CAE, program, and vehicle teams to streamline project deliveries.
  • Contribute to creating a documentation system for specifications and project test results.
  • Engage in domestic and international travel to supervise or contribute to abuse testing, expert committee, and/or field investigations.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in RESS safety and/or automotive industry.
  • Solid understanding of basics and fundamentals of mechanical, electrical and systems engineering.
  • Solid understanding of RESS technology (from battery cell level to system level) and high voltage safety.
  • Strong understanding of thermal runaway phenomenon, failure propagation/cascading failure and prevention, and thermal runaway detection methods/strategies.
  • Experience in designing state of the art experiments (beyond regulatory and standard battery tests).
  • Experience in reviewing and analysis of large test data sets.
  • Excellent in using analytical and numerical tools to analyze the data (mathematical methods, MATLAB, Python, etc.).
  • Experience with automated requirements management tools (e.g., JAMA, Cameo, Polarion, etc.)
  • Experience performing or participating in DFMEA, PFMEA and HARA.
  • Excellent soft skills (communication, presentation, team-oriented attitude, etc.).
  • Ability to quickly comprehend complex systems, identify problems and effectively coordinate an action plan to drive decisions.
  • Ability to solve open-ended engineering problems using systems level thinking.
  • A detail-oriented personality with solid documentation and reporting skills.
  • Ownership mindset, enthusiasm, and collaborative spirit.
  • Flexibility to work in a fast-paced startup environment with frequent prioritization adjustments.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of abuse test standards and regulations: SAE, UL, IEC, FMVSS 305a, R100.03, GB, UN38.3, etc.
  • Capable of performing RESS teardowns and post-mortem analysis.
  • Experience with performing root cause analysis (i.e., 5whys, 8D, FTA, etc.).
  • Experience working with high-voltage, high current systems (power supplies, batteries, etc.).
  • Experience with CAD in at least one professional 3D CAD package, preferably Catia with the ability to generate drawings.
  • Experience of basic fabrication and ability to communicate effectively with machine shop staff.
  • An ability to mitigate unforeseen problems creatively and effectively.
  • Experience with automated requirements management tools (e.g., JAMA, CAMEO, Polarion, etc.).
  • Experience with Atlassian Software (JIRA, Confluence).
  • A history of working independently with limited oversight or input once a base understanding has been established.

Education Requirements:

BS (and preferably MS or PhD) in a relevant engineering discipline

Salary Range: The compensation range for this position is specific to the locations listed below and is the range Lucid reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for the position taking into account the wide variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including job-related knowledge; skillset; experience, education and training; certifications; and other relevant business and organizational factors.

Additional Compensation and Benefits: Lucid offers a wide range of competitive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability insurance, vacation, and 401k. The successful candidate may also be eligible to participate in Lucid’s equity program and/or a discretionary annual incentive program, subject to the rules governing such programs. (Cash or equity incentive awards, if any, will depend on various factors, including, without limitation, individual and company performance.)

Base Pay Range (Annual)

$113,800—$156,530 USD
